Former ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III took a shot at sports networks discussing politics, sparking debate across social media. His comments came a day after ESPN’s Mina Kimes criticized the USA’s Department of Defense for briefly removing an article about Jackie Robinson’s military service on their webpage.

Griffin, a former NFL quarterback and now-media personality, voiced his opinion on Thursday afternoon. “Sports shows on TV should be about sports, not politics,” he posted on social media.

His stance resonated with some fans who believe sports networks should stick to game coverage. However, others defended Kimes, arguing that Robinson’s legacy is inseparable from the racial challenges he overcame.

On Wednesday’s Around the Horn, Kimes condemned the Pentagon’s removal of Robinson’s military tribute. Officials initially removed the article to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion web pages. They later restored it, with a Pentagon spokesperson stating they do not highlight figures like Robinson “through the prism of immutable characteristics such as race.”

Kimes pushed back. “Jackie Robinson was known for many things, but above all, first and foremost, his ongoing courage in the face of racial discrimination,” she said. “That history cannot be erased, it cannot be undone, and it must be recognized to fully understand and celebrate his legacy.”

ESPN let go of Griffin before the 2024 NFL season, and he has not elaborated beyond his social media posts. However, his stance reflects an ongoing debate about the intersection of sports and politics. While some argue that sports should be an escape from real-world issues, others believe that figures like Robinson symbolize more than just athletic achievements.

As of now, none of Griffin’s former colleagues have publicly responded to his remarks. However, the discussion around ESPN’s coverage of political topics remains a polarizing issue among sports fans
