Chantal Kreviazuk is taking a lot of heat for changing the words to the Canadian national anthem before the 4 Nations Face-Off final on Thursday night.
Kreviazuk sang “O, Canada” in front of a packed Boston crowd amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Canada and changed the line saying “in all of us command” to “that only us command.”
The tweak was a direct shot at American President Donald Trump, who has said on several occasions that the Great North should become the 51st state.
While some Canadians praised the bold move, others felt like the decision was disrespectful.
“You had one Job sing the national anthem so that others can sing with it,” a user wrote in the comments.
“DEI hire to sing? 🤷🏻♂️” another asked.
“The Americans must have been trolling us Canadians because that was the WORST anthem I’ve ever heard! She didn’t even know the f**ing words, she was out of tune, sang some weird a** notes, it was just horrible. Why couldn’t they get an actual Canadian to sing?” a comment read.
“It was probably the worst anthem I’ve ever heard,” someone else confessed.

Kreviazuk later took to social media to defend her actions, refusing to back down despite the criticism and referring to her detractors as “bots.”
She also showed off photos of her changed lyrics written on her palm.
You can see her statement below:
“Hey everyone.. thank you so much for all the love and support. What a game. And what an experience! To be clear I am fine with the haters. They’re mostly bots. I get how this works. I feel only all your incredible passion for our country and your kindness. I want you to know that i didn’t plan this or plot at all… i was honored to get the gig! During soundcheck I sang the wrong words ‘in all thy sons command’ out of habit and when I analyzed the new line I thought wow- this could mean something so pertinent to our country in this moment with a change in just two words, three syllables,” she explained. “I didn’t dream that such an effect would be had by deciding to go out there and do it. But it really felt like the right thing to do here is the thing. Art to me is an expression of our truth.
“The anthem is not a lawful document. It is an expression of the collective, and it changes from time to time when the moment demands it should. So yes. In this very peculiar and potentially consequential moment I truly believe that we must stand up, use our voices and try to protect ourselves… no – we should express our outrage in the face of any abuses of power. I was raised in part by music that was inspired by brave voices committed to peaceful conflict resolution. Canada, not unlike Ukraine is a sovereign nation. Period. We have a culture individual to others. we are united in our values. We care. We’re kind. We are strong.”
Thursday’s Canadian national anthem singer also told the Associated Press that she made the change because she “believes in democracy, and a sovereign nation should not have to be defending itself against tyranny and fascism.”
As to whether Trump will respond to the bold shot directed at him remains to be seen.
