Emmerdale has just let us in the secrets of John Sugden, but actor Oliver Farnworth who plays him, has revealed there is yet more to come. We can’t wait!
It has been confirmed that John has Hero Syndrome – he’s desperate to be seen as the saviour, so often sets up situations that he can then manipulate.
His behaviour caused the death of Nate Robinson – albeit by accident – he also drugged Chas to then rescue her. But as the truth remains a secret to those on-screen, Oliver has revealed where we go from here.

The truth about Nate’s death and the involvement of John Sugden revealed in Emmerdale
The actor said: “The exciting thing is that the viewers find out first before anyone else in the village. So it’s kind of like letting them into these big secrets that John’s been harbouring. It’s caused him a lot of stress and anguish having to hide things.”
And one of those things he’s been hiding is what really happened to Nate. Flashbacks told us that John was helping Nate who was struggling with his injuries after being attacked by Cain. But after injecting him with something to help, it seemed John then didn’t save him in time and Nate died.
“Obviously, what happened with Nate to all intents and purposes was an accident,” Oliver stresses. “But there’s no way that John dealt with it, or is continuing to deal with it, in the right way. Not just from a legal point of view, but from the point of view of the families that will be affected. There will certainly be a lot of fallout from that.”

What happens next?
And the fallout will see Tracy, who is struggling financially since Nate seemingly cut her and their daughter Frankie off, among others, find out. Oliver explained how John is preparing himself for that.
“There’s lots of big stuff coming up,” he teased. “With the sort of web that John’s woven for himself, in the back of his mind, he’s anticipating people to start being suspicious, secrets to come out and people to start finding things out.
“He’s probably got a few set pieces prepared in his mind for dealing with all of this, but really what he’s had to do so far is just kind of think on his feet and adapt to situations around him. I’m sure this will all change soon.”
And of course now there is more to lose – he has a home, a family and a fiancé in Emmerdale… “The jeopardy at stake for him now is that he’s got his whole life in Emmerdale Village. He’s got the love of his life, Aaron, he’s got a family that he never had. He does not want to lose all that, under any circumstances. There’s going to be a few battles ahead, I think,” Oliver admitted.

Much more to come from John Sugden in Emmerdale
And amidst it all, the actor revealed even he doesn’t know everything about John Sugden – and that there is more to come. “Even day by day, week by week, I’m literally still discovering things about him. So yes, there’s plenty more to come and yes, it’s a gift of a part.”
Although John’s future on Emmerdale remains unclear, he cannot surely get away with his crimes for long? So what does that mean for Oliver‘s future on the soap?
“I absolutely love it here at Emmerdale,” he confessed. “I really, really, truly love it. The character is a gift, really, because the backstory that’s been created from day one is so deep. The different intricacies of the character are just so interesting to play. He’s not just a villain or a bad person on paper, there’s way, way more to it than that.”
