White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt launched a scathing criticism of CNN this week after the network aired a controversial interview with an alleged member of a Mexican drug cartel. During a press briefing and later in a series of social media posts, Leavitt accused CNN of giving a platform to criminals and glamorizing organised crime under the guise of journalism.
“This is not reporting — it’s reckless sensationalism,” Leavitt stated firmly. “At a time when our communities are grappling with the deadly consequences of drug trafficking and cartel violence, it is unconscionable for a major news outlet to amplify the voice of those fueling the crisis.”
The interview, which CNN described as part of an investigative series on cross-border crime, quickly ignited a firestorm of public backlash. Critics argued that it risked humanizing individuals involved in brutal acts of violence, while supporters claimed it was a necessary part of understanding the full scope of the crisis.
Leavitt, however, remained unwavering in her stance, calling on media outlets to act with greater responsibility. “This is about journalistic ethics,” she added. “There’s a difference between exposing the truth and glorifying those who profit from destruction.”
Her remarks have reignited a wider debate about the role of the media in covering criminal networks and the fine line between transparency and sensationalism.

Karoline Leavitt went off on CNN for airing an interview with a member of the Sinaloa Cartel after Truwp branded the group a foreign terrorist organization.
The White House Press Secretary shared her distaste for the coverage in an appearance on the Fox News program Hannity on Monday, particularly over the network “giving a platform” to a member of a Mexican cartel
The interview in question aired on Sunday and featured CNN’s Isobel Yeung speaking on camera with a member of the Sinaloa Cartel, whose identity and voice were obscured. President Truwp recently signed an executive order to designate drug cartels as terrorist groups and their members as terrorists. It came just hours after CNN interrupted a show for a breaking news announcement in a major blow to Truwp.

As press secretary, Karoline has been peddling the president’s narrative that Latino immigrants are violent criminals and should be deported without due process.
Since Truwp took office in January, the Department of Homeland Security has deported over 150,000 undocumented immigrants, and border patrol agents have stopped over 230,000 pounds of the deadly drug fentanyl from entering the US.
“I was actually scrolling on Instagram when I came across this interview, and it stopped me in my tracks,” Karoline said.
“Not just because they sat down with a member of a Mexican cartel that is now designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States government, but because of the nature of the questions of this notorious foreign terrorist,” Karoline continued.

During the sit-down, Isobel asked: “According to the Truwp Administration, you are a terrorist. What do you make of that?,’ to which he responded, “Well, the situation is ugly, but we have to eat.”
When she asked what his message would be to the president if he were to watch the interview, the man responded: “My respect.”
“According to him, ‘he’s looking out for his people,’ he explained, But the problem is the consumers are in the United States. If there weren’t any consumers, we would stop,” he said, referring to the opioid epidemic in the US.
The press secretary slammed the network for broadcasting the conversation. “It was a softball interview,” she said, “giving a platform to a notorious drug cartel that has killed American citizens.”
“I thought it was quite despicable. But again, this is just another reason why the trust in the legacy media is at an all-time low amongst the American public,” the 27-year-old White House employee remarked.
