A MasterChef champion has shared a “grim” health update following her c@ncer treatment. The BBC star took to her Instagram page after completing her first round of chemotherapy – admitting it had been an incredibly tough experience.
Thomasina Miers, who underwent a mastectomy in July after discovering two lumps in her chest, posted a photograph of a large tent set against a stunning pink sunset. The 50-year-old, who triumphed on the BBC cookery programme in 2005, provided an update in her caption, writing: “When you’ve done your first chemo and despite it being more grim than most other things thus far, you still get through it..
“Not only do you still get through it, but you do this funny thing called a Fast Mimicking Diet through it, which seems a radical way of improving the side effects and a week later you manage to dance until 1AM at your uni flatmate’s 50th birthday party and it feels BLOODY BRILLIANT…”
“No one is taking the dancing out of this stubborn, mad-capped, people-loving, life-loving, thrill-seeking cooker woman, no sireeeeeeee.”
Thomasina, co-founder of the Wahaca restaurant chain, courageously disclosed her c@ncer diagnosis back in July. She wrote on Instagram: “So…. I had a mastectomy last Friday.”
“Originally I’d had a cyst there, but the 2nd (& 3rd) lump turned out not to be one at all. Quite the reverse. They were bad asses. Take out: Always check a lump EVEN if you think it’s a cyst and do it promptly!”
Assuring fans, Thomasina clarified that her prognosis is “good” nonetheless. Disclosing that she subscribes to the ancient wisdom of Hippocrates and Ayurvedic medicine, she emphasised that for her, “food is medicine” and “positive framing is everything”.
She also informed her followers that “addressing and dealing” with emotions, alongside her age, has been beneficial for her.
Thomasina has enjoyed a remarkably successful career following her appearance on MasterChef. A talented chef and businesswoman, she co-founded Wahaca in 2006, and the establishment remains popular to this day.
She’s also featured in cooking programmes, including Wild Gourmets and A Cook’s Tour of Spain, as well as Mexican Food Made Simple. Thomasina has also published several books, including Mexican Table, Meat-Free Mexican, Home Cook and Chilli Notes.
