Former Today show host Brooke Boney has revealed she married a “lovely” man while in her mid-20s but said “things didn’t go to plan” and they ended up divorcing.
The Australian journalist, 37, made the confession during an appearance on the Inherited podcast this week. While talking to host Ruby Hall, Brooke said she tied the knot around 12 years ago.
When the podcast host said she didn’t know about the marriage, Brooke, who worked on Channel Nine’s Today show for five years, joked she is “a mysterious woman.” Sharing some insight into the relationship, Brooke said of her ex-husband, “He’s such a beautiful man, gosh he’s so lovely. I was so, so lucky to have him in my life.”
Talking about the split, the TV presenter said she “just wasn’t maybe mature enough or didn’t kind of know how to sort of deal properly with things that come up in relationships.” While she didn’t share exactly when the divorce took place, Brooke said she and her secret ex were together “for a while” but sadly, “things didn’t go to plan.”

She added, “And that’s okay, that’s totally okay. When those things don’t go to plan, it shouldn’t mean that you love yourself less or you should feel like you’ve failed in any way.” Brooke also said her family tried to step in to “save” the marriage but it was too late as the couple had already decided to break up.
During her interview on the podcast, she recalled a conversation she had with her grandmother about her relationship not working out – and her nan replied, “It’s okay, I get it. You’re gonna be okay.” Brooke said that in the following year, she occasionally wondered whether the relationship would have worked out if they were older or “better equipped.”
But she stressed she doesn’t have any regrets, saying, “Everything that’s ever happened, good or bad in relationships since then, has always taught me something.” After a clip from the interview was shared on the official Instagram page of the podcast, fans thanked Brooke for sharing her “inspiring” journey.
One wrote, “Loveee this ep. such an inspiring career journey.” Another added, “Can’t wait to listen to this.” Earlier this year, Brooke opened up about her decision to leave her role as a Channel Nine news and entertainment presenter one year ago and move to the UK, where she was offered the opportunity to study a Master of Public Policy at Oxford University.
She told Stellar Magazine, “I remember getting the email to say I’d got in and thinking, am I even allowed to go? Are they going to let me do this?” However, she said that when she decided to pursue her dream, her co-workers supported her. “I felt so relieved but also kind of sick. You can’t go back after that. And once I’d said it on TV, that’s it,” she said.
Brooke added that she felt touched after receiving flowers as she gave a farewell on air. She told fans of the morning TV show, “I’d like to say thank you to the audience for accepting me. I’m grateful to every one of you for tuning in every day. It’s a privilege to go over to Oxford, but it is even more of one that I have got this much love around me. It makes it difficult to leave.”
