Jessie J has lifted the lid on the unusual reason why she broke royal protocol when meeting the Princess of Wales after the Royal Variety Performance at Royal Albert Hall last month. Despite admitting that she had been “briefed not to”, the Price Tag singer pulled the senior royal in for a warm embrace for one heartbreaking reason.
Speaking to This Morning on Wednesday (December 3), the singer-songwriter admitted: “I just saw a mum who has also gone through cancer publicly, and I just wanted to give her a hug. It was as simple as that. I didn’t see her as the Princess of Wales, I mean, obviously I did, and I was respectful.”

The Bang Bang singer, who revealed that she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer in June, added that she asked Kate for permission before going in for a hug. She explained: “I said to her, ‘Can I give you a hug?’ and she received it.”
Jessie branded Kate “inspiring” after she revealed at the beginning of the year that she was in remission following her cancer battle. She went on: “I know the days that she has maybe gone through, and I just wanted to give her a hug, mum to mum, human to human.”
The Grammy nominee, who is a proud mum to her son Sky, whom she shares with her boyfriend Chanan Safir Colman, had previously opened up about the sweet interaction last month in an interview with The Independent.
She told the outlet: “We acknowledged that it’s something that is not easy to go through, especially in the public eye.” Although Kate has kept much of her cancer journey private, William did recently open up about what it was like navigating the delicate situation with their children.

The Prince of Wales told Eugene Lecy on Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler: “Everyone has their own coping mechanisms for these things; the children are constantly learning and adapting.
“We try to make sure we give them the security and the safety that they need, and we’re a very open family, so we talk about the things that bother us, the things that trouble us. But you never quite know the knock-on effects it can have. And so it’s just important to be there for each other and reassure the children that everything is okay.”
