Coronation Street star Luca Toolan has shared his ‘hate’ for his character and watching himself play Weatherfield High bully Mason Radcliffe as he teases it’s “only going to get worse”.
Luca made his debut in the ITV soap last as Mason and over the months viewers have both been brought to tears and left shouting at their TV screens over Mason’s actions. The teen has been relentless in his bullying campaign against Liam Connor.
He’s been behind the cruel taunting and abuse of the fellow teen online and in person- with his gang of mates, including Liam’s neighbour and former friend Dylan Wilson. The horrifying abuse has recently led to the heartbreaking discovery that Liam was contemplating taking his own life.
Liam is now preparing for professional help, and it appeared Dylan was willing to confess to headteacher Mrs Crawshaw about what had happened after a heart-to-heart with his dad, Sean Tully. But Mason has since got to him first and in upcoming scenes, the bully will threaten Dylan into keeping quiet.
Speaking about Mason’s actions and what is to come, Luca said: “It’s just a ticking time bomb, because it’s just getting worse and worse, and the anger inside him is just like an acid, it eats him up so I can’t really see it getting any better.”
He continued on what he expects from his character in the future: “I can just see it getting worse because of his upbringing. In his head I don’t think it ever registers he’s doing anything bad, it’s just the way he’s been conditioned by his family, like that’s always been the way for him in my backstory.

But it has been hard for Luca – the son of Hits Radio host Mike Toolan – to watch his first major role due to his character’s horrific actions “I hate what he does. For the most of it, I watch it with my dad or my grandma and they’ll just look over and say, ‘Is this what you’re capable of?'” the soap star told us.
However, radio presenter Mike is nothing but supportive of his son and recently shared more praise Luca online. Following his first appearance on This Morning on Monday (February 26), Mike shared a clip of the interview with Rochelle Humes and Andi Peters and said: “Unbelievably proud of Luca on his first ever tv interview @thismorning.”

He continued on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Shedding light on bullying is pivotal in smashing its stronghold & @itvcorrie is doing a such a job in raising awareness. Well done mate @LucaToolan.”
And his followers were quick to respond with praise. @Wild3J said: “Amazing. we need more Luca’s in this world!” @taylor898092 commented: “I am so proud of your incredible son he is doing such an amazing job @Toolyboy.” @suegreen103 wrote: “Wow!!! Amazing.”
@grierson_judy replied: “The mark of a good actor is that their character is totally believable, Luca is fab as Mason.” @paula_1958 shared: “What a lovely young man! He’s a good actor as well because I want to throw the remote at my TV when he come on.” @LindaGeary10 added: “He is so believable it scares me. Well done to him for such great acting.”
