MACY GRAY’S Dramatic Moments As MASKED SINGER Exit Sparks Shockwaves. T

The Masked Singer contestant Macy Gray was voted off the UK show on Saturday night’s episode after having previously appeared on both the US and the Australian versions

Singer Macy Gray became the latest contestant to be seen voted off the Masked Singer just days ago and her exit has since attracted much attention.

Toad in the Hole was unmasked as Macy, 57, on Saturday’s episode of the ITV show, which returned for its sixth series earlier this month. She was voted out of the competition after having ended up in the sing-off against Bear.

After host Joel Dommett, 39, announced that Toad in the Hole, who had yet to be unmasked, would be leaving, the contestant walked off the stage. Joel teased: “Toad in the Hole has gone already!” He later added: “What is going on?”

She later returned to the stage and took off her mask, but didn’t appear impressed to be leaving the competition just three episodes into the new series. Macy went on to perform one last time for the audience though.

It isn’t the first time that the Brit Award winner – best known for her acclaimed single I Try – has attracted attention over work in the showbiz industry. She’s previously made headlines over other experiences in her career too and we’ve taken a look at a few instances.

It was reported prior to the episode airing that the contestant who had been voted out had “stunned” the audience by walking off stage ahead of the reveal. A source told the Sun that the celebrity had been “gutted” to leave the show.

Following the episode’s broadcast, it’s been claimed that Grammy Award winner Macy had been “almost shellshocked”. A source told the Sun that she was “totally blindsided” by the news of her departure after enjoying her time on the US version last year, where she reached the final.

The source said: “When Macy stormed off stage everyone was frozen in shock but as soon as she reached backstage, crew removed her mask so they could talk her down. […] It was the shock of it for her as well as the upset and in that moment she had a very raw, human reaction and wanted out.”

Further discussing Macy’s exit from the show, the source said that her departure was “no indication of her talent”. They added: “It took everyone backstage ages to talk her round and poor Joel was on stage essentially doing a stand-up routine to try and keep things under control.”

During an interview with BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, as previously reported, Joel discussed the situation, saying: “I love Macy, she is incredible, great voice – but I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6ft toad storming off. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” And discussing the decision to vote her off, he said: “She is a legend, she has a recognisable voice and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are. If you go home early though, it is a win-win situation because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.”

It was recently reported that the “chaos” didn’t end with Macy looking unimpressed when she eventually returned to the stage. A source told the Mirror that she refused to take part in the post-show interview, which celebrities have done over the years after leaving the show. The source said: “It is normal for the celebs to answer some questions for a Q&A sent out by ITV but Macy didn’t do it. This is only second time in history of the show this has happened so it shows how unhappy she was after the show.”

Masked Singer Australia

Macy reportedly had a similar reaction when she left the Masked Singer in Australia back in 2021. She had performed as the character Atlantis on the Network 10 show and was voted out of the contest half-way through its third series.

Panelist Dave Hughes, now 54, recalled her exit during an interview on radio statement 2Day FM’s Morning Crew a day later, as previously reported. He said: “[Macy] had such passion for the Masked Singer Australia that when she was told that she had to leave the show, which you saw last night, she refused to leave the show.”

He continued: “She said ‘no, I’m continuing on the show’ and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to ‘no, you have to leave’. She said ‘no, I’m not leaving’.” He said that she later agreed to take her mask off and leave.

Macy performed ‘naked,’ reportedly wearing nothing but a pair of Jimmy Choo heels, to raise funds for the Elton John Aids Foundation back in 2004 – which attracted attention at the time. The performance was held at the Coronet in London and she was seen behind a chair that read: “I’d rather go naked.”

As reported by the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for Macy said at the time: “Never before has a major artist gone so far in aid of a good cause. The idea came after Macy Gray was asked to be a part of an auction of pictures showing celebrities wearing Jimmy Choo shoes. She wanted to do something special for it so she decided that in her photograph she would be naked on stage.”

It isn’t the first time that Macy attracted attention over an appearance on ITV, with her having made headlines in 2019 due to an appearance on Lorraine. The interview was described as “car crash TV” at the time. Whilst speaking to host Lorraine Kelly, she asked for directions to a festival and questioned why she had to be up so early for the interview – even proposing that the show be filmed at night and then pretend to air “live” each morning.

One particular part of the interview that drew attention came when Lorraine asked about Macy why she had been hospitalised shortly beforehand. The guest replied: “Cause I’m a vampire. I have a low blood count.” Lorraine then suggested that Macy may need blood transfusions, to which she replied: “Yes, like every two or three years I run out of blood.” Macy went on to tease: “I just wanna go bite people! But it’s illegal, I know, so I have to go to the hospital.” Addressing her remark about biting people, Lorraine laughed: “No, don’t do that!”
