Before they were co-hosts on TODAY, Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin shared a moment that now makes them laugh — though it wasn’t quite so funny at the time. In a joint interview with Parade magazine, published on January 17, the duo looked back on a lighthearted incident that unfolded years ago, long before they shared a desk. Savannah recalled her longstanding connection to Craig’s wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and her own husband, Mike Feldman, saying, “Our families go way back. I’ve actually known Lindsay longer.”
The memory that stood out most? A night when Savannah unintentionally cut short a date between Craig and Lindsay. Back when Savannah was hosting MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown alongside Chuck Todd, Lindsay was booked as a guest. That booking turned out to be a disruption to Craig and Lindsay’s evening. “I remember vividly one time we went out to dinner while we were dating,” Craig shared. “And she had to leave early because she had to be on The Daily Rundown.” His reaction at the time? “I was like, ‘The show with Chuck and Savannah? Screw Chuck and Savannah for taking you away early!’”
The story is now a funny piece of their shared history, reflecting how their paths have long been intertwined — even before they officially became morning TV teammates.
Craig did turn on the TV, though, to see Lindsay in action.
“I remember the first time that I saw her on the show. She was wearing this yellow dress. Yellow is her favorite color,” he said. “I just wanted to make sure she wasn’t trying to blow me off, so I woke up the next morning to actually watch, and there she was. So it’s kind of full-circle.”
Things really came full circle on Craig’s first day as co-anchor of TODAY on Jan. 13, when Lindsay and their two kids, Delano, 10, and Sybil, 8, stopped by Studio 1A to wish him well in his new gig.
“It’s surreal, and to me, it symbolizes belief because you know, you dare to dream a dream and then to see it actually come true, it makes me think about a spouse making it to the Super Bowl, or like, the game-winning catch. That’s what this feels like,” Lindsay said.
“What makes me so proud is just the person that Melvin is and understanding that it’s the kindness and how genuine he is, so we’re just excited and pumped,” she added.
