The Chase viewers have issued a furious demand to ITV bosses – calling for a major rule change after another contestant chose to play it safe in a tense episode this week. Friday’s show (July 18) saw four new hopefuls – Sophie form Bristol, Eddie from Chelmsford, Ariane from Stewarton and Peter from York – take on Chaser Paul Sinha for a shot at the jackpot. But one contestant’s decision reignited a long-running frustration among fans.

Ariane stunned the audience after earning £7,000 in the cash builder – only to take the lower offer of £3,000 during the head-to-head. Her conservative play added less to the pot, prompting outrage online from viewers who say contestants are ruining the game by always choosing safety over strategy.

Taking to X – formerly known as Twitter – one user raged: “The biggest flaw in #TheChase is the British contestants themselves forever always going for the middle and low amounts of money, makes the show boring and predictable.

“They seriously need to entice the contestants or make it that only 1 can take the low offer.”

Another blasted: “What an absolute s**t show!! wtf are you doing ffs” Others piled on, with one adding: “All wanting to win big money – then go for the shite shit show of a minus offer.”

Sophie had already been eliminated after failing to secure her £4,000, but Peter soon had fans saluting him by going for the top offer of £83,000 – and winning it – boosting the team’s total to £90,000.

The pair stumbled after both answering questions at the same time or after the other had buzzed. One fan also blasted this rule, stating: “don’t agree with the “wrong person answered” reply on The Chase. They’re a team!!”

Despite the drama, the trio who made it to the final managed to answer 17 questions correctly – but were caught with time to spare by Paul, leaving them empty-handed.

Adding fuel to the fire, host Bradley Walsh also came under fire during the same episode for a comment that left viewers scratching their heads.

After Sophie from Bristol was eliminated early on, Bradley signed off by saying, “Sadly, you’re no longer with us,” prompting fans to flood social media with confusion.

One viewer wrote: “She’s no longer with us? They’re going to kill her off? Even I think that’s harsh.” Another joked: “Sadly you’re no longer with us?! She didn’t pass away, Brad!”

Some also complained Sophie was dealt an unfair set of questions compared to others, with one saying: “Absolutely disgracefully difficult questions for Sophie – you’d have thought she was going for the £50k, not £4k.”
