“I once wished Fiona had Canc3r” – The confession that SHOOK Britain – Former GMTV host Fiona Phillips and her husband Martin Frizell (66) went through a devastating time that led Martin to say “we are strangers living under the same roof” – Fiona’s tragedy at 61 began a heartbreaking story!

Fiona Phillips’ husband Martin Frizell has issued a heartbreaking update on his wife’s condition as she battles Alzhe1mer’s disease.

The former GMTV host was diagnosed with the progressive brain disorder in 2022 at the age of just 61.

And after the impact Alzhe1mer’s had on their marriage was laid bare in an exclusive extract from her memoir in the Mail, Martin issued a positive update on Fiona’s condition.

Martin, 66, took to Instagram on Monday to share a sweet throwback picture with his wife, 64, taken at Silverstone in 2022.

He revealed a ‘smile had been put on his face’ because in a recent conversation with Fiona, she had been able to remember details of the outing – even though it had taken place three years prior.

Ahead of Lando Norris winning the F1 British GP, Martin shared the picture with Fiona, captioned: ‘Fond memories in Lando’s garage at Silverstone from ‘22, good luck to This Morning’s adopted son today.

‘Fiona remembers meeting and speaking with Lando, what a great treat this was and quite a few of the details – put a smile on my face today.’

Martin revealed he had a ‘smile on his face’ because Fiona had remembered an outing they’d had to Silverstone three years prior with ‘quite a few of the details’

Over the weekend, the Mail published exclusive extracts from Fiona’s upcoming memoir, Remember When: My Life With Alzhe1mer’s.

In the tome, the pair – who wed in 1997 and share two children – revealed their marriage was ‘falling apart’ as a result of Fiona’s then undiagnosed battle with the disease.

Fiona explained: ‘My marriage was coming under increasing strain.

‘I’m sure the disease was at least partly responsible, but at the time neither of us could see it. I just became more and more disconnected from Martin and the boys.

‘”You’ve totally zoned out of our family and our marriage,” he would say to me. “Don’t be so bloody ridiculous!” I’d yell back.

‘But, if I’m honest, I think he was right. I just didn’t seem to have the energy for any of it any more.

‘I didn’t realise quite how seriously Martin felt about it all until one evening he announced he was moving out.

‘”Stop being so ridiculous!’” I yelled. “I’m just worn out. I’m tired – of everything.”

‘”That’s what you’ve been saying for years,’” he replied. “Maybe this – our marriage – is what’s making you so tired.”‘

‘It makes me emotional’: Kate recalls conversation with Fiona

Fiona first met Martin when she was working on GMTV as a presenter and he was its chief correspondent.

He later popped the question after they had been dating for just four weeks, before they went to Las Vegas to tie the knot in 1997.

Last year, he revealed he was stepping down as editor of ITV’s This Morning after 10 years in charge, in order to be ‘around much more’ for his wife during her Alzhe1mer’s battle.

Martin confessed in the upcoming memoir that he ‘wishes’ Fiona had been diagnosed with cnc3r rather than Alzhe1mer’s.

Detailing his thoughts on Fiona’s diagnosis, he admitted: ‘Being brutally honest, I wish Fiona had contracted cnc3r instead.

‘It’s a shocking thing to say, but at least then she might have had a chance of a cure, and certainly would have had a treatment pathway and an array of support and care packages. But that’s not there for Alzhe1mer’s.

‘Just like there are no funny or inspiring TikTok videos or fashion shoots with smiling, healthy, in-remission survivors.

‘After someone is diagnosed with Alzhe1mer’s, they are pretty much left to their own devices. There is nothing more that can be done and you are left to cope alone.

‘Bit by bit, it takes everything. Through time, even the most glamorous, glittering star – such as Fiona was – will be wiped away.

‘As time has passed, I have come to understand that if I were to fall ill or worse, the whole house of cards would collapse. I have had to stay well for Fiona.’

Also in the extract, Fiona revealed she ‘blocked out’ memories of her 2005 Strictly Come Dancing stint because he was ‘traumatised’ by professional dancer Brendan Cole.

She detailed her time on the BBC show, sharing how she felt when footage of Brendan ‘shouting and swearing’ at her during rehearsals resurfaced amid the show’s bullying probe.

Fiona wrote: ‘He could also be seen looking at my dancing and saying, “Pathetic, it’s not good enough!” Then I’m begging him to “stop shouting” and worrying that I look completely ridiculous.

‘There’s a clip where I say to the cameraman that Brendan is looking at me like he’s stepped in something.

‘I really don’t remember much of that time now – maybe I blocked it out because all I recall is the sense that it was incredibly traumatic.’

Fiona continued: ‘I was on the brink of tears most of the time and felt utterly exhausted.

‘And it all seemed so pointless. Brendan would be swinging me around the dance floor for a paso doble and I’d be thinking, “I’ve just put Mum in a care home, what on Earth am I doing dressed up to the nines in a dancing competition?”

‘I should probably have told the crew – or even Brendan – how much I was struggling, but I didn’t. I just stumbled on. Literally.

‘Fortunately (although I don’t think Brendan saw it that way), we were voted out in week four. It was all over on Bonfire Night. What a relief!’

Brendan did not have his Strictly contract renewed in 2018 and famously became tearful when he announced the news on Lorraine in January of that year. Fiona later branded his axing ‘karma’.

MailOnline has contacted Brendan’s representatives for comment.

Following Fiona’s Alzhe1mer’s diagnosis she was put on a drugs trial in an attempt to slow down the symptoms, something which she says appears to be working for her.

In a previous interview with Women&Home magazine, Fiona said: ‘I’m on a clinical trial and the signs are positive.

‘I’m taking part in a revolutionary drug trial that’s trying to find a cure. It involves a brand-new drug and a placebo, and I have no idea which one I’m on.

‘When I went for my six-month check-up in October, they did cognitive tests to see where my brain was at, which showed that I was in the same place as I was the previous year.

‘I’m hopeful that the drug is holding the disease where it is. I’d rather not have to be on the trial but I’m very grateful I am.

‘There are risks, including bleeding on the brain, so I’m a guinea pig, but there’s a real chance it could help.’

Now Ashley has thrown her hat in the ring to be the show’s next female presenter.

Speaking to The Sun, she candidly said: ‘I’ve always said that I’m always there when the time comes.

‘I would always love to host This Morning.’

Ashley added that she only follows where her interests are, and she will always ‘work harder than anyone else’.

Cat Deeley, 48, and Ben Shephard, 50, took over as main anchors of This Morning in March 2024, following the high-profile exits of Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

Ashley made her first TV debut in 2012, landing a role in E4’s Made In Chelsea, however, she departed just a year later.

In 2018 she took part in Celebrity Big Brother, alongside the likes of Malika Haqq, Amanda Barrie, Ann Widdecombe and India Willoughby.

The series was eventually won by drag queen Courtney Act, as Shane Jenek scooped the crown.

Ashley is known for sharing honest insights into her life with fans and in May shared a brutally honest behind-the-scenes look at her prep for the Bafta TV awards.

From late night dress fittings ‘because my body isn’t sample size’ to sneakily hidden yoghurt stains from feeding her kids, Ashley was sure to highlight the ‘lack of glamour’.

Speaking candidly about her journey towards self-acceptance, Ashley explained how important it is for her to protect Ada from the toxic culture of body image obsession.

She exclusively told MailOnline: ‘I really don’t want my daughter to ever feel like she’s not enough or to ever critique herself, especially when, you know, we can’t change our body shape.

‘Women are so much more than our bodies, and we should be learning how to respect ourselves and strength.

The All-Star forward arrived in Phoenix in 2023 after the Nets traded him for a plethora of unprotected first-round draft picks, as well as Cam Johnson, Mikal Bridges and Jae Crowder.

The blockbuster trade comes after the Suns failed to make the playoffs last season despite boasting a Big 3 of Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. Despite having KD for the past three seasons, the team never advanced to the conference finals.

George Stephanopoulos’ wife Ali Wentworth – here with George and their two daughters at a premiere – shared the heartbreaking news on social media
The beloved GMA star took a break after his father died on June 19.

While he was absent all last week, George returned to his hosting duties on Monday alongside Gio Benitez and Rebecca Jarvis.

However, his return was just for the day as he remained off-air for the rest of the week.

During his brief stint back, George didn’t mention his father’s death; however, many believe this is the reason for his recent absence.

George’s wife, Ali Wentworth, was the one who shared the news of her father-in-law’s death via Instagram.

“Reverend Robert George Stephanopoulos, PhD, Dean Emeritus Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity passed away on June 19th,” she wrote.

“He was my father-in-law and I loved him dearly. He married us. He laughed with us. He debated our daughters. He praised my Thanksgiving turkey.”

“He loved ice cream. He was everyone’s council. He married or baptized almost every Greek on the eastern seaboard. He was held in the highest regard. He will be missed by so many. Sagapo Father Bob.” she concluded.

According to the reverend’s obituary, his funeral was held in Ohio on Wednesday.

George made a return on Thursday to bid Dr. Jennifer Ashton an emotional farewell alongside Lara Spencer and Ginger Zee.

George’s absence isn’t the first time a GMA host has left his hosting gig to attend to family matters.

Fellow host Michael Strahan was also missing from the show following his daughter’s cancer diagnosis.

In late October of 2023, Michael revealed his daughter Isabella was diagnosed with medulloblastoma.

Following her cancer diagnosis, the former NFL star took frequent absences from the show to be by his daughter’s side.

    Good Morning America anchors

Good Morning America airs on ABC from 7-9am EST, Monday through Friday. The show has a panel of anchors who discuss the week’s events and current news. The anchors who appear on the morning show include:

    Robin Roberts
    Michael Strahan
    George Stephanoupolos
    Ginger Zee
    Lara Spencer

Two weeks ago, Isabella shared that she had finished chemotherapy in an emotional vlog.

The college freshman celebrated the heartfelt moment with her famous father.

Michael briefly returned to the show earlier this week but was absent for most of it.

There’s no inclination whether he’ll be back the following week.

    WHERE’S ROBIN?

GMA viewers have not only seen two beloved hosts missing from the show but three.

Robin Roberts also stepped away from the morning program for some time.

She was seen last week for a live segment in Portugal but has since returned to her hosting duties.

While in Portugal, Robin was accompanied by her wife, Amber Laign.

Despite her brief coverage on GMA, it seems Robin has extended her trip to a full-on vacation.

In her Instagram Story on Thursday, Robin was seen kicking her feet up while enjoying the scenic views in Duoro Valley.

In Robin and Michael’s absence, Gio Benitez and Rebecca Jarvis have replaced the lovely hosts.

Ginger struggled to hold down her coat’s hood while giving anchor David Muir an update on the Category 4 hurricane.

The weather presenter was stood atop a platform in St. Pete Beach, where she and her crew had sought refuge, with waves crashing against a seawall just feet away.

While she took all the appropriate measures and was not harmed, fans shared their worries beneath a video posted to Instagram by the network.

One wrote: “Prayers for Ginger, her team and all affected,” while another added: “Hey @ginger_zee !!!! Welcome to Saint Pete!!! Be safe out there!!!”

A third warned: “Ginger if you don’t take your behind indoors. We get the picture without you risking your life. Prayers for the south and Ginger.”

Whit Johnson has also been broadcasting from the hurricane, with the star seen knee-deep in flood waters during his links.

The National Hurricane Center had predicted the hurricane could bring “catastrophic winds and storm surge to the northeastern Gulf Coast”.

Experts foresaw storm surges across large parts of the Gulf Coast with the highest peaking at 15-20ft between Carrabelle and the Suwannee River.

Forecasters said Tampa Bay would get around 5-8ft of surge.

Tropical storm warnings were also issued along the state’s Atlantic coast and the coastlines of Georgia and South Carolina.

Horrifying footage as Hurricane Francine flooding traps residents & 100mph winds wreck homes leaving 450k without power
A massive six to 12 inches of rain were expected to hit parts of the southeastern US, with isolated totals even reaching 18 inches.

The National Hurricane Center said on X: “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

“A catastrophic and deadly storm surge is likely along portions of the Florida Big Bend coast, where inundation could reach as high as 20 feet above ground level, along with destructive waves.

“There is also a danger of life-threatening storm surge along the remainder of the west coast of the Florida Peninsula.

“Residents in those areas should follow advice given by local officials and evacuate if told to do so.”

The threat was so imminent that warnings were also issued far inland, with Helene potentially set to reach cities like Asheville, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia.

There’s also a risk that the strong winds produce life-threatening flash floods and landslides across the southern Appalachians.

Hillsborough County in Florida State issued a mandatory evacuation of all mobile and prefabricated homes at 9am EDT on Wednesday, September 25.

As of 5 pm EDT on Tuesday, September 24, the Florida Division of Emergency Management had issued mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders in 13 counties.

Six had mandatory orders – Charlotte County, Franklin County, Gulf County, Manatee County, Pinellas County and Wakulla County.

Tampa International Airport suspended operations on Thursday, September 26 to prepare for the hurricane but will reopen once Helene passes.

“So I hope one day nobody has to go through surgery to get rid of skin cnc3r.

“But now we have to keep an eye on our skin, our hands on our skin, be very vigilant, and notice any unusual spots.”

He added, “And if those spots change, then get immediate care.”

It has been only two weeks since Sam underwent surgery in the office of his dermatologist.

But now the meteorologist is back on air, although viewers may notice a small scar under his left eye.

GOOD Morning America meteorologists Sam Champion and Ginger Zee tried out the viral Dancing With the Stars TikTok trend with some help from host Michael Strahan.

On Friday, Good Morning America posted a video of Sam Champion and Ginger Zee attempting Dancing With the Stars’ Whitney Carson and Danny Amendola’s leg lift, which has become viral over TikTok.

Sam, 63, starts off the video by saying, “We need a doctor on standby!

“Danny and Whitney call that move Operation Archer. Since Ginger and I have both competed on Dancing with the Stars, we are going to try this trend.

“We have tried this a couple of times, but not successfully. Are you ready?”

A caption then read “30 minutes earlier…” and showed their practice, as Ginger, 43, and Sam could be seen failing at the trend three times.

In their first on-camera attempt, Sam successfully lifted Ginger up before she lost her balance and fell over.

Michael, 52, joked, “Michael is not doing that!”

Sam and Ginger tried again, but the weatherman instead dragged her across the floor.

Michael then went over to help Ginger up off the floor.

When Ginger said, “We need a week,” Michael jumped on the floor and said, “Alright forget it, Sam let’s go!”

The hosts were hysterical in laughter as Michael lay on the floor with his legs in the air.

The Instagram video was captioned, “They were SO CLOSE!!! You guys will get it next time don’t worry.”

Ginger commented on the video, “We need a few more attempts and I swear we can get it.”

Viewers were hysterical over the moment, as one commented on Instagram with laughing emojis, “I’m SCREAMING!!!”

A second wrote, “Just drag her across the floor! Too funny.”

A third fan said, “This was beyond hilarious!!!!! I need this!!!”

A fourth joked, “At least the floor is now all clean!! Great effort!!”

A GOOD Morning America and ABC News legend is leaving the network after more than three decades – with tributes pouring in from the likes of Deborah Roberts and Diane Sawyer.

Michele Mayer, who has worked as stage manager across multiple flagship broadcasts, is returning to her home state of Kentucky.

She began her career at ABC in the mid-1990s as a teleprompter operator during Peter Jennings’ tenure on World News Tonight.

Over the years, she became a key figure behind the scenes, working alongside anchors including Charles Gibson, Diane and David Muir.

Her departure was marked with an on-air tribute from the World News Tonight team.

“Finally tonight, a personal note about someone we will miss here at ABC News,” David said in the segment introducing Michele’s farewell.

Diane spoke about Michele’s behind-the-scenes role and influence on the anchor desk.

“I want all the wonderful people who watch World News to know that when you’re watching the person sitting at this desk, you’re really also watching the coach behind the camera. Michele was always there to say move it along, or slow it down, or time to get out, or, in my case, she had signs printed up [that read ‘Sit up straight’],” she said.

“When Shelly says sit up straight, you do,” David added.

Charles reflected on his first official night anchoring World News, recalling: “The first night the show was mine, not just filling in for Peter, I came into the studio and Michele said to me, ‘There may be some people around here who are a little bit afraid of you. I’m not. I’m the person that will tell you what to do.’ And she did, in the nicest way, for four years.”

David paid tribute to Michele’s long-standing role on the team. “I am still in denial about all this. I can’t believe Shelly is leaving. My partner in crime out there…you deserve this, Shelly, go home to Kentucky, back with your family and the horses and the beautiful countryside…I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said.

Diane added: “We were just two Kentucky girls who got to the big city. She was hilarious when you needed a laugh and, most of all, she is and always will be a person who cares passionately about what we do.”

Numerous ABC and Good Morning America colleagues shared messages of appreciation on social media.

“She always kept me on point btw. We’ll miss you fiercely, Michelle!” wrote Deborah in the comments of an Instagram post.

Chief meteorologist Ginger Zee called her “an institution,” adding, “Going to miss you dearly. Sending you all the sunshine.”

TV personality Julie Smith added, “This is soooo sweet! This relationship really does become a close and valued one. Also… Kentucky ladies are where it’s at!”

ABC News correspondent Mireya Villareal also chimed in: “What an amazing career and journey! Your love and protective energy for the set and all its people were incredible to watch and experience. Enjoy your time back home.”
