Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley were desperate to probe Wes Streeting on whether he would run for leader after the Health Secretary issued a formal statement denying rumours he’s plotting a leadership challenge against Prime Minister Keir Starmer. However, Good Morning Britain viewers were left issuing the same complaint during the tense interview after Streeting told Reid and Madeley: “What’s happened to me overnight is the most unjustified attack on a faithful since Joe Marler was banished in the final.”

Streeting was referencing the BBC programme, The Celebrity Traitors, as were Reid and Madeley in the build-up to the minister’s interview, with viewers lashing out on social media. One person penned: “How many Traitor references do ITV want to drop this morning? It’s embarrassing?” A second added: “Stupid one-liners. Are you a traitor or a faithful…” A third penned: “Do GMB realise ‘The Traitors’ is a BBC show? Constantly referencing a rival channel is like another BBC show, pointless!”

Wes Streeting was grilled on GMB by Reid and Madeley

Someone else noted: “Perhaps Wes Streeting didn’t watch enough of The Celebrity Traitors to realise that the Traitors always claimed to be Faithfuls.” Another wrote: “Wow, Wes Streeting was doing so well on #GMB, seemingly honest answers & polished presentation, then, Boom ‘I’m a Faithful’. Boom, Keir Starmer doesn’t know who the #10 briefer is. Backed into a corner, he unwittingly exposed the chaos & deceit that is the real #YesPrimeMinister.”

During the interview, Madeley said: “You’ve been telling virtually anyone who would listen that you are a faithful… So why is it Number 10 and not just the Westminster gossip and rumour machine, but Number 10 and the Prime Minister’s closest aides briefing against you last night? They said you are on the move to oust the Prime Minister?”

Streeting replied: “Yeah, I think they have been watching too much Celebrity Traitors. What’s happened to me overnight is the most unjustified attack on a faithful since Joe Marler was banished in the final.

“But look, it’s water off a duck’s back, and I’m afraid this sort of briefing is not unknown in politics. In fact, I think about some of the cabinet colleagues who have been briefed against. Angela Rayner, Lucy Powell, Bridget Phillipson and Lisa Nandy – at least they are picking on one of the blokes this time. So I admire their commitment to gender equality.”

He added: “I don’t think I’ve given the Prime Minister any reason to doubt my commitment to supporting him and supporting the government to turn this country around and deliver the change that people are crying out for.”

While there was backlash to the reference to the BBC show, The Celebrity Traitors, which Streeting also mentioned during his interview on BBC Breakfast this morning, some GMB viewers praised the minister.

One noted: “Wes Streeting showing he has guts turning up for today’s TV interviews – most (with No10 briefing against him) would have fielded a junior minister!” Another said: “I like Wes Streeting – no nonsense and excellent communicator. He always comes across so well in interviews.”
