After multiple short hospital stays, Carter, the longest-living president of the US, underwent hospice care at his Plains, Georgia, home in February 2023

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100.
Carter, who holds the record as the longest-living U.S. president, entered hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, in February 2023 after several brief hospital stays. A native of Georgia, he was the only president to hail from the state, serving one term from 1977 to 1981. The former president perished at his Plains home at approximately 3:45 p.m., according to his son Chip Carter. However, Carter was able to fulfill his dying wish before his ultimate d3ath: voting for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election in November.
Carter’s, the only Georgian elected to the White House, only term was dominated by the Iran hostage crisis but distinguished by his efforts to bring peace between Israel and Egypt. His work at the Carter Center in Atlanta with his wife, Rosalynn Carter, and his support of charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity helped him gain notoriety in the decades that followed.

Rosalynn was by his side for 77 years. Her legacy of advocacy and compassion mirrored her husband’s. Her d3ath on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96, deeply affected the former president, but the enduring love between the two was a source of comfort in his final weeks. Together, they built a life filled with family, faith, and a shared mission of service.
“People will be celebrating Jimmy Carter for hundreds of years. His reputation is only going to grow,” Rice University history professor Douglas Brinkley wrote in his book “The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter.”

A rare figure in US history, Carter was the first president to live to 100. He celebrated the milestone this year with characteristic modesty as the skies above Plains provided the backdrop to a flyover by four F-18 jets and vintage planes in his honor.
Born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924, the president grew up on his family’s peanut farm before embarking on a career in the US Navy.In 1970, Carter was elected governor. Before making an unlikely run for the presidency, Carter served one term with success. He won the Democratic nomination and defeated Republican President Gerald Ford in November 1976.

Instead of taking an armored limousine past the people on his inauguration day, Jimmy and Rosalynn got out with their daughter Amy in tow and waved and held hands as they went down Pennsylvania Avenue.
But it was in his post-presidential years that Carter truly found his place in the hearts of Americans.
A tireless advocate for global health, democracy, and housing, he founded the Carter Center in 1982, which became a beacon of humanitarian work worldwide.
