Viewers tuning into Good Morning America on Wednesday were surprised to see a new face at the anchor desk.
George Stephanopoulos was noticeably absent from his usual spot alongside Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan, and in his place was ESPN sportscaster Joe Buck — a move that left many fans confused and concerned.
Joe, who is not a regular presence on GMA, joined Robin and Michael for the morning broadcast. The hosts made note of his unfamiliarity with the early hours. “I don’t know how you do this every day,” Joe said, before adding with a laugh: “I’ll try not to drive the ratings into the ground.”
While it’s not unusual for daytime hosts to take time off for vacations, they are typically replaced by familiar contributors or backup hosts from the show’s regular team.

Social media was quick to react to Joe’s guest appearance. One viewer asked, “Where is George?” while another voiced frustration on X, saying, “@GMA seriously? Joe Buck? What is wrong with you people?”

“Please tell me Joe Buck is not permanently on Good Morning America,” another viewer said.
A third person wrote, “Yes I will literally stop watching. Hopefully George is just on vacation.”
While the temporary shakeup drew mixed reactions, George has had an eventful few weeks. Earlier this month, he and his wife Ali introduced a new member of their family: an adorable puppy named Fig.

George has been married to Ali Wentworth, who is an actress, comedian, and writer, since 2001. Together, they have two daughters, Elliott and Harper.
