Sam Asghari, Britney Spears’ ex-husband, has broken his silence in a rare interview, shedding light on his experience during her controversial conservatorship.

The actor and fitness trainer, who was married to the pop icon for 14 months,
shared his perspective on *The Viall Files* podcast, where he described the legal arrangement as “strange” and admitted to feeling “afraid” at times.
Asghari, 30, met Spears, 43, on the set of her *Slumber Party* music video in 2016, and the two began dating shortly after.

Their relationship continued throughout Spears’ conservatorship, which lasted for 12 years before being terminated in November 2021.

Although they married in 2022, their union ended in divorce just over a year later.

Now, for the first time, Asghari is opening up about the challenges he faced while navigating Spears’ legal battle.
**Discovering Britney’s Conservatorship**
During the podcast, Asghari recalled the moment he first learned about Spears’ conservatorship. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the singer herself who informed him, but rather someone from her team.
“She didn’t explain it,” he revealed to host Nick Viall. “Somebody called me and said, ‘Oh, just so you know, this is this, and make sure you’re obeying by our rules and stuff like that.’”
Asghari admitted he found the situation confusing and unsettling, especially given his background. Having immigrated to the U.S. from Iran at age 12, he was already familiar with the concept of control and suppression, particularly in regard to women’s rights.
“I’m coming from a country where I dealt with this already,” he explained. “I dealt with women being suppressed and being controlled by men their whole life. So I was like, ‘Okay, this is weird, but wait a minute, this is America. Something doesn’t make sense.’”
Rather than immediately confronting Spears about it, Asghari chose to observe and try to understand the situation. He admitted he initially struggled with grasping why the conservatorship had been put in place to begin with.

**Fear of Losing Britney**
Asghari also revealed that he felt powerless in changing Spears’ circumstances, especially since he was just her boyfriend at the time. He was afraid that if he tried to intervene, he could be cut out of her life altogether.
“I was afraid they were gonna maybe make me not see her and things like that,” he admitted.
Instead, Asghari focused on supporting Spears as much as he could, choosing to be a gentle presence in her life rather than directly challenging the conservatorship. “You have to be gentle and provide support as much as you can,” he shared.
When asked if he ever received direct threats from Spears’ estate for not following the “rules and regulations” they had in place for her, Asghari dodged the question. However, he made it clear that he never signed a so-called “gag order” that would prevent him from speaking about their relationship.
**Life with a Global Superstar**

Reflecting on his time with Spears, Asghari described their relationship as an intense crash course in Hollywood and fame. Being in a relationship with one of the most famous women in the world, he said, opened his eyes to how vulnerable she was to those around her.
“Being in a relationship with someone that was such an icon and was at the top of her world… someone who Taylor Swift looks up to and everybody else is looking up to,” he said. “She’s the blueprint.”
He added that modern pop stars “aren’t even close” to reaching Spears’ level of influence and success. Despite their breakup, he admitted he now considers himself a true fan of her work after witnessing firsthand the dedication and effort she put into her career.
**Signing an NDA and Moving On**
Asghari also addressed speculation that he had been legally bound from speaking about their relationship, confirming that he had indeed signed a nondisclosure agreement (NDA). However, he downplayed its significance, noting that NDAs are commonplace in Hollywood.
“You can’t take a poop in Hollywood without having an NDA,” he joked.
While he acknowledged that breakups are always difficult, Asghari insisted he holds no ill will toward Spears. “It sucks when it comes to any romantic relationship ending, but I am still able to reflect fondly on the time we spent together,” he said.

He also expressed his dislike for people who publicly discuss their failed relationships in an attempt to gain sympathy or attention. “I always hated the fact that somebody goes and talks about this and cries and tries to get attention or use that as leverage,” he said.
Ultimately, Asghari believes that what matters most is the time they shared, rather than how things ended. “It was a big part of my life and her life as well,” he concluded.
As Spears continues to navigate her post-conservatorship life, Asghari appears to be doing the same. Though their love story has ended, his latest remarks suggest that he will always hold respect and admiration for the woman he once called his wife.
