When the family of TODAY’s Craig Melvin surprised him on his first day as co-anchor on Jan. 13, they showed up in coordinated outfits. Craig’s wife Lindsay Czarniak, along with kids Delano, 10, and Sybil, 8, were all in shades of navy, white and pink.

The Melvin family does love to celebrate big occasions and holidays in matching attire.

For every Halloween and Christmas, the Melvins go all out, with coordinated costumes and paired PJs.

The Melvin costume tradition first gained fame when Delano was a toddler and Lindsay was pregnant. Sybil was born five days after Halloween. “Am convinced our unborn child has decided to stay in a little longer to avoid the embarrassment,” Craig captioned his Instagram post.

2017

Sybil — who goes by “Sibby” — got into the action and was part of the bat colony, a request of her brother. “Sibby” was initially short for sibling, and was a nickname Delano would use while Lindsay was pregnant.

2018

This was the year Craig joined the Third Hour of TODAY. When the news was announced on the show, he told co-hosts Savannah Guthrie, Carson Daly, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker that he had a lot of gratitude for his family. “Lindsay, Del and Sibby — they give me life.”

2019

The Melvins’ costumes are extra special because of who makes them. Craig gave a shoutout to his mother-in-law, Terri Czarniak, for crafting their skeleton looks.

2020

The Melvins have a special Christmas tradition that came from Lindsay’s childhood: They sing “Happy Birthday” to Baby Jesus at Christmas Eve dinner. Craig told TODAY.com that he initially thought the tradition was odd but he has warmed up to it. “I would contend, if you’re not singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Jesus and you’re celebrating Christmas, maybe you’re doing it wrong,” he said.

2021

Another Christmas tradition that the Melvins seem to love: They stay in their matching PJ’s all day long. “Merry Christmas to you and yours from the wacky Melvin tribe that didn’t leave the house all day,” Craig captioned his Instagram post. 2022

Craig shared with TODAY.com that the holidays mean more to him as a father than ever before.

“For me, the holiday season is always extra special, since I was a little boy,” he said. “Being around family and obviously the opening of presents. But then you get older and it’s like, ‘Eh, Thanksgiving, Christmas, eh.’ But then you have kids and you get to experience the holidays through their eyes and all of a sudden, you’re a kid again.”

2023

While the Melvins like to stay home on Christmas, it doesn’t mean they don’t get out. Lindsay shared a pic of the family going out for a scooter ride. They are bundled up in coats, but you can see the matching Christmas jammies underneath!

2024

Lindsay shared another favorite Melvin holiday tradition of finding a live Christmas tree. She wrote on Instagram: “Looking back at finding “Sniffy” our Christmas tree. Our kids like to name it each year — it was indeed a nod to Myles.” (Myles, by the way, is the family’s sweet pup!)
