BREAKING NEWS: BBC Breakfast Legend Reveals Why She’d Never Return To Replace Naga Munchetty
Steph McGovern has ruled herself out of an immediate return to BBC Breakfast as speculation continues over who could replace Naga Munchetty when she leaves the programme later this year.
The former BBC Breakfast presenter was asked whether she could make a comeback following confirmation that Naga will step away from the show after 17 years.
Steph, however, made clear that the demanding early starts simply do not fit her current life.
Asked about the possibility of returning, she said: “And this stage isn’t one that involves getting up at half past three to go on telly.”
Her response stops short of permanently closing the door on BBC Breakfast, but it makes clear that an immediate return is not something she is considering.

Steph Rules Out Early-Morning Comeback
Steph left BBC Breakfast in October 2019 after becoming one of the programme’s familiar faces.
She later moved to Channel 4 to front Steph’s Packed Lunch, which combined celebrity interviews, food, entertainment, lifestyle features and consumer stories.
The programme remained on air for more than three years before Channel 4 cancelled it in 2023, citing rapidly changing audience habits.
Since then, Steph has built a very different working life.
She has launched a podcast, focused on her businesses and presented consumer programmes while also raising her six-year-old daughter.
That lifestyle appears to be one of the main reasons a return to the intense schedule of breakfast television is not currently attractive.
Steph explained that her life tends to move through different stages, with her present circumstances not suited to the 3.30am starts required for BBC Breakfast.
Steph Praises Naga as an ‘All-Round Legend’
Steph also spoke warmly about Naga following news of her departure.
Asked whether she had offered her former colleague any advice ahead of the move, Steph dismissed the suggestion that Naga needed guidance.
“I don’t think I need to give Naga any advice, she’s an all-round legend,” she said.
Steph explained that the pair remain in contact but do not spend their conversations discussing career moves.
Instead, they simply check in with one another.
“She’s a powerhouse in herself and brilliant at what she does,” Steph added.

Naga Leaving After 17 Years
Naga announced in July that she would be leaving BBC Breakfast, bringing her 17-year association with the programme to an end.
Her final appearance on the show is expected in December.
She will then move into an expanded role on BBC Radio 5 Live from January.
Naga already presents the station’s breakfast programme three mornings a week, but her new schedule will see her host it five days a week.
She has described the flagship radio position as an opportunity that was too good to turn down and said the role would require her full focus and energy.
Naga currently fronts BBC Breakfast alongside Charlie Stayt from Thursday to Saturday.
Her departure therefore leaves a significant gap in the programme’s regular presenting line-up.
BBC Yet to Confirm Replacement
Despite increasing speculation about who could step into Naga’s role, the supplied report does not identify a confirmed replacement.
Steph’s comments effectively remove her from the immediate conversation, at least for now.
Her wording also leaves some room for the future, as she spoke specifically about her current stage of life rather than making a permanent declaration that she would never return.
Naga Staying With the BBC
Although Naga is leaving the television programme, she is not leaving the BBC.
John McAndrew, the BBC’s director of live and daily news, has said viewers will miss her while welcoming the fact that she will remain with the broadcaster.
Her move to Radio 5 Live represents a major change after nearly two decades on the BBC Breakfast sofa.
For Steph, however, a return to fill that gap appears unlikely in the short term.
The former presenter has made her position clear: while she remains close to Naga and has fond links to the programme, getting up at 3.30am for live breakfast television is simply not part of her life right now.
