Angie Best, the first wife of late footballing legend George Best, has given fans a heartbreaking update on her gruelling battle with cancer. The health and wellness advocate, 73, admitted in a new social media video which she posted on Tuesday that she’s been suffering from extreme hair loss due to the chemotherapy treatment she is undergoing.

Angie has been bravely sharing the ups and downs of her health battles on Instagram, since the 73-year-old’s only child with George, Callum, revealed the heartbreaking news in a moving video on 8 January that his mum had been diagnosed with advanced colon cancer.

He explained emotionally that the disease, which she had been diagnosed with a few weeks’ previously, had spread to Angie’s liver – and that the diagnosis had been delayed after initial alternative treatments and a misdiagnosis of Lyme disease.

Currently receiving treatment in Switzerland, Angie – whose niece is former EastEnders actress Samantha Janus, took to social media to upload a fresh video of her out for a walk, looking tired and pale and wearing a baseball cap.

She told followers: “I’m wearing my hat because I didn’t the other day, and with the sun I came out in my face with the brown hormonal stuff, and I can’t be doing with that. And you can see right through my hair because I’ve lost so much of it.”

However, Angie, whose positive attitude has inspired her followers, added: “But I’m losing all the bad stuff. @womenthatsparkle sally says when you lose her hair during cancer, you’re losing all the bad memories and thoughts that have got you to this place, so you’re losing that through your hair. Then the new hair is new growth, new life, new health. I like that – that works for me!”

As well as her devoted son Callum, who responded underneath her post with, ‘Love this’ alongside a red heart emoji, followers were swift to comment on Angie’s post, one saying, “Bless you Angie, out with the old, in with the new.

Another commented, “Yes, losing all the bad stuff, good way to look at it”, while another fan wrote, “ That’s a great way of looking at it Angie. You’re a tough lady, and doing so well.”

Calum, announcing the sad news back in January, said in his video: “Hi everyone, I’ve been thinking long and hard over the past few weeks about how to write this.

“I wanted to get the words right, but when it comes to health, and when it comes to my mum, the only thing that really matters is honesty. A few weeks ago, my beautiful, wonderful mum was diagnosed with cancer.”

“For as long as I can remember, she has lived her life rooted in health, fitness and wellbeing. She has always believed in taking care of the body, mind and soul. But as we all know, cancer doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care where you’re from, how you live, or how healthy you try to be. And now, it’s here – and it’s with my mum.”

He added that he had set up a GoFundMe page for financial support to help get specialist treatment and care for Angie. Admitting he doesn’t often cry, Calum continued: “I’ll be honest, I haven’t cried in years but this has been an emotional rollercoaster I never expected to be on.”

Via her son’s Instagram page, Angie shared her own message. In the caption of his video, Calum wrote Angie’s words, which promised she was “ready to fight”.
