Strictly Come Dancing bosses ‘ban’ royal family butler Paul Burrell to avoid ‘upsetting Queen Camilla’
Queen Camilla has been open about her love for Strictly Come Dancing
Strictly Come Dancing bosses have reportedly ruled out former royal butler Paul Burrell from appearing on the hit BBC dance competition, over concerns it could jeopardise their relationship with Queen Camilla.
According to insiders, Paul, who once served as butler to the late Princess Diana, has been suggested as a potential contestant multiple times in recent years.
However, producers have allegedly decided against it, fearing that his inclusion could offend senior royals, particularly Camilla, who is known to be a devoted fan of the show.

Why Strictly Come Dancing ‘blocked Paul Burrell’ over Queen Camilla concern
“They know how much Queen Camilla loves the show and would love for her to appear in the audience,” a source told The Mirror. “But they fear that Paul’s involvement would scupper that relationship.”
Paul has publicly denied claims that he has profited from his royal connections.
However, his reputation as a royal insider, particularly in relation to Diana, is believed to be the reason behind the show’s cautious stance.
His multiple books, reality TV appearances, and interviews have often been criticised as self-serving by some royal fans and former Palace staff.
Meanwhile, Strictly’s connection to the royal family is well-established.
Queen Camilla has long expressed her love for the show, and even described herself as one of its “greatest fans”. The Queen consort reportedly watches the series religiously and has even become friendly with members of the Strictly cast.
Professional dancer Johannes Radebe spoke fondly of meeting Camilla during a Loose Women interview.
“She once told me, ‘We all watch it.’” He recalled. “I saw the responsibility she has on her shoulders, how she dedicated her time and was really listening to people. She went around and shook everyone’s hands. I really admire her.”

Queen Camilla’s relationship with Strictly Come Dancing explained
The Queen’s support for the show has gone beyond just watching.
She once hosted a tea party at Clarence House for the show’s dancers and judges, during which she danced with former pro Brendan Cole.
In 2020, she even appeared in a special pre-recorded message for the show’s finale. The series was won by comedian Bill Bailey and partner Oti Mabuse.
Even Strictly hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman have enjoyed a royal nod of approval. Both were honoured in King Charles’ 2025 Birthday Honours list.
Tess Daly’s husband, radio and TV presenter Vernon Kay, has also spoken about the Queen’s fondness for the show
“Camilla and Tess have a real friendship through it now. They don’t text, but messages come through mutual friends. When they see each other, the Queen is always asking: ‘Who’s your favourite?’ She wants to know the backstage gossip.” Vernon told The Sun.
“It’s crazy to think of the king and queen sat on the sofa with a brew watching your wife present Strictly.”
