Good Morning Britain was interrupted for a bombshell Peter Mandelson update which could spell bad news for 𝘒𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳. The government is set to release hundreds of documents relating to the appointment of Mandelson as Ambassador to the United States. Mandelson was sacked from the role in September 2025 after documents revealed the extent of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Good Morning Britain’s political correspondent Louisa James explained: “This one is about who knew what and when and what we will see is the start of the picture about the process which led to the prime minister appointing Peter Mandelson to one of the most prestigious jobs in government, despite his known links with Jeffrey Epstein.”

Highlighting that focus has been elsewhere over the past few weeks, Louisa believes attention will return to the prime minister and his judgement.

She explained the documents set for release are typically ones the public would never normally see, featuring confidential emails between Downing Street, the Cabinet Office and the Foreign Office.

The documents are also expected to include a due diligence report which, according to The Guardian, noted that hiring Mandelson posed a “serious reputational risk” of hiring him.

Louisa added: “𝘒𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳 has since said that he would never have made that decision had he known what he knows now. He has apologised to Epstein’s victims and a Downing Street source previously told me that they hope these documents will vindicate because it will show that Peter Mandelson lied.”

The documents will be published today, just after Prime Minister’s Questions – a timing which has been criticised by the Conservatives because they believe it means Starmer will “avoid scrutiny”.

Louisa also outlined what will not appear in the documents, including anything relating to national security, international relations, or material the police have asked not to be published.

She went on: “There will be nothing that the police have asked not to be published because it relates to their investigation into Peter Mandelson on allegations of misconduct in public office.

“He has denied all wrongdoing including that charge. He remains under investigation, although he has been released from his bail conditions.”

Mandelson has been accused of passing sensitive information on to paedophile financier Epstein during his time as business secretary.
