Some ideas sound funny in a meeting but fall flat on live TV. That’s exactly what happened to NFL on FOX during its pre-game show on Sunday. During Sunday’s broadcast of the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs matchup, the network rolled out a fake movie trailer poking fun at Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s relationship and then engaging together.

The spoof, titled My Big Fat Chiefs Wedding, tried to channel the energy of a 2000s rom-com trailer. Instead, it set off a wave of backlash.

A dramatic voiceover just took it off. “She’s one of the most successful musical artists in the world, and he’s six-foot-five. But somehow, they still found love,” the narrator declared over clips of the couple. What followed felt even stranger.

An actor playing a caricatured Kelce announced, “Hey guys, it’s me, Travis Kelce. Guess what? I’m getting married.” From there, the trailer leaned on jokes about Swift’s Philadelphia roots and her recent introduction to football.

Kelce And Swift Fans Are Just Against It

The skit didn’t sit well with viewers. NFL fans and Swift supporters alike hammered the network on X.

“As soon as it started I just turned the channel,” one user wrote.

Another joked, “I have to imagine some illegal substances and cold pizza at 2 am was involved in the planning and maybe even the execution of this.”

Sports media account Awful Announcing summed it up bluntly: “A tough watch.”

Even a cameo from My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Joey Fatone failed to rescue the bit. Fatone appeared on FaceTime only to say, “No, I’m not doing this. I’m a Giants fan.” The fake Kelce character fired back, “Well I’m a Backstreet Boys fan. Bye bye bye.”

Despite the awkward sketch, Fox still got Kelce on air. The Chiefs tight end sat down with Erin Andrews to talk about his engagement. “It’s been an exciting, exciting ride up to this day,” he said. “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her.” However, he also said earlier about his engagement and how excited he is.

For Swifties and football fans, though, the pre-game comedy experiment only confirmed one thing. Not every love story needs a parody trailer.
