GB News was interupted for breaking news as a guest pointed out the UK’s flaws in adopting Denmark’s immigration policy. Opinions editor at Weekendavisen, Christian Foldager spoke on GB News and says Denmark’s immigration policy, which Britain is mirroring has been highly effective for his country, but highlights the flaws in Britain using it. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s new immigration policy has embraced a “Denmark-style” asylum system which makes the UK less attractive for illegal migrants and making deportations smoother. The controversial plans were met with backlash especially with pro-migrant Green, Lib Dem and Labour MPs when she informed the Commons.
Danish journalist Christian spoke to Martin Daubney about the new plans and said: “The Danish strategy is to deter people from applying for asylum. It’s not the case of the UK copying Denmark successfully. no matter how harsh the terms are, nobody speaks Danish, but everyone speaks English and will want to claim asylum in the UK.”
Martin then said: “And I wonder if you’ve just pointed out a major flaw there. The entire population of Denmark is only around six million.”
Yesterday in the Commons, Ms Mahmood told MPs it was the “uncomfortable truth” that the UK’s generous asylum offer, compared to other European countries, is drawing people to UK shores, and for British taxpayers the system “feels out of control and unfair.”
In a major U-turn, failed asylum seekers and foreign criminals are set to be offered more money to leave the UK as part of a radical overhaul.
Some MPs are already raising sceptical about Mahmood’s proposals and have publicly spoken out. Rachael Maskell for York Central said to the BBC that many of her colleagues are “seriously concerned”.
Labour MP, Brian Leishman, told the BBC he had “big reservations” about the proposals.
Ms Mahmood will be hoping her “throw the kitchen sink at it” approach in her new immigration policy will gradually reduce arrivals and increases deportations.
However, she needs to persuade her fellow Labour MPs to vote en masse for the new plans.
