Meghan Markle made her highly anticipated debut on MasterChef Australia on Sunday. The Duchess of Sussex, 44, was all smiles as she entered the kitchen as a guest judge. Filmed in April during Prince Harry and Meghan’s tour Down Under, the episode aired on Network 10. Standing in for Andy Allen, who was on paternity leave, Meghan was introduced to the final four contestants—Vinnie, Petro, Casper, and Aaron—as a “mystery guest judge” alongside hosts Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, and Jean-Christophe Novelli.

When asked by host Poh Ling Yeow how she would like to be addressed—”Do I call you Duchess?”—Meghan opted to drop the official title for the kitchen, responding: “Oh, call me Meghan. Absolutely, yeah.” The move comes amid reports of behind the scenes tension where her team requested producers avoid using the term “royalty” in promotional teasers.

Inbaal Honigman analysed Meghan’s body language throughout the episode and spotted the moment a royal remark left her “delighted” as she detailed all in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk on behalf of Casino.

Around 55 minutes into the show, a chef remarked, “It’s not every day that a duchess…”

Inbaal said: “And when Meghan hears the word duchess, her face changes into a subtle superior pout.”

The body language expert continued: “She tilts her head back, which has her looking down her nose at the others a bit. Her chin is raised proudly and jaw juts forward a bit, which is a defiant facial expression, as if she knows that she’s a duchess against all odds. Being a duchess, remaining a duchess has been a hard battle for her and she’s proud that she is in fact a duchess.

But the pout is the real kicker – Meghan’s lips close but remain unclenched, as if suppressing a smile. She’s beyond delighted to be described as a duchess.”

Meghan has received a positive reaction from viewers who tuned into MasterChef Australia who applauded the duchess on her debut.

Inbaal noted, “The contestants themselves are nervous around Meghan, they’re sweating, gazing downwards, shaking”, adding, “they are out of their depth in the presence of royalty.”

She added: “Meghan appears flattered and pleased with their nervous reactions, gazing at them with softened eyes, as if she welcomes their weak-at-the-knee approach.

The professional chefs show a lot of signs of pure delight. Wide smiles, straight backs, raised heads and direct eye contact reflect their feelings of joy. The professional chefs show happiness at its truest, most delighted form, at being able to pull in such a phenomenal, impressive guest.”
