A Place in the Sun star reveals truth behind ‘fake’ reactions and ‘brutal’ co-star

TV presenter and property expert Scarlette Douglas has addressed claims of ‘fake’ reactions on her shows as she admitted her co-star and brother Stuart is more ‘brutal’

Former A Place in the Sun presenter Scarlette Douglas has revealed there are no fake reactions when filming in shocking properties. The TV star, who now works alongside her brother Stuart Douglas, admitted she is “very open and honest” when things need to be said.

She has been on hand to offer her property expertise on her Channel 4 show Worst House on the Street, as well as George Clarke’s Flipping Fast and Love It or List It. Scarlette first showed off her talents on A Place in the Sun as she helped British homebuyers find their dream properties abroad.

In 2022, she teamed up with her former footballer brother Stuart to help renovate the worst homes on a street into the best. However, the show has proved tricky at times, as given the name, they are working with very tired homes that are in desperate need of some TLC.

Scarlette and Stuart have entertained viewers with their honesty when they lay eyes on their challenges for the first time. The TV star even declared “I just want to leave” when faced with a house that had gaping holes in the ground as well as a damp smell. While some presenters like to keep their true thoughts hidden, Scarlette and Stuart are certainly doing things differently.

Scarlette told the Mirror: “There’s no faking it, we are honest. Stuart is more brutal than me but we are very open and honest. We don’t hide it. We say as is.” She recalled the most shocking time was when they were told by a couple they had purchased a kitchen before even finding a house.

Siblings Scarlette and Stuart work on their property shows together

The presenter said: “Both mine and Stewart’s faces were just in shock. I was like ‘let me get this right, you brought the kitchen before you brought the house?’. We were stuttering. We were spluttering. We had no idea what to do at that moment because we’ve never had that before. Ever.”

Stuart also teased an upcoming episode of their brand new series where they try to help people sell their properties that aren’t shifting. However, he revealed: “Our reactions are priceless because people honestly cannot see why [their properties aren’t selling] and some of the properties that we’ve seen you would not believe.”

He added: “We have to be brutally honest as to why we feel that it’s not sold.” Stuart admitted they do sometimes get a reaction back to their honesty. The property guru revealed: “Sometimes you get a bit of a bit of kickback and a bit of animosity. They don’t believe what you say because it’s hard.

“It’s their house they love, it’s where they live. Sometimes when you critique somebody’s personal property, it can be hard to take. But we have to be honest. We have to be honest in what we think because it’s an industry that we know very well.

“If we’re not honest, we’re not going to be helping those that, in essence, need our help.” Being siblings has also set Stuart and Scarlette apart and what they do on screen, is what they have been doing off-screen for years thanks to their property business.

However, there can be some sibling rivalry and disagreements no matter how close they are. Scarlette admitted: “I am normally telling Stuart off because he likes to mess around. Stu is the goofy one on set, so I am the one that has to say ‘come on lets focus’. But that’s what brings a lot of energy and fun to the sets.

“I think because there’s two of us, technically it’s half the work, even though it’s still a lot of work. There are times when it gets to about 4pm in filming and I have forgotten anything we need to be talking about.” Stuart joked: “She’s hungry at that time.”
