Strictly Come Dancing presenter Johannes Radebe faced a wave of viewer complaints after his first live show in the role was disrupted by timing and microphone problems.
The 2026 series marked a major change for the BBC programme, with Johannes moving from the professional dance line-up into presenting alongside fellow newcomers Emma Willis and Josh Widdicombe.
Saturday night’s live show was the first without long-serving hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, putting all three replacements under immediate scrutiny.
While some viewers praised Johannes for taking on a completely new role, others complained that a recurring production issue made parts of his links difficult to hear.
Viewers Spot Same Problem After Almost Every Dance
Johannes was stationed on the balcony area, where he welcomed celebrities and their professional partners before the scores were revealed.
But several viewers noticed that he often began speaking while contestants were still making their way upstairs.
That meant his voice competed with the noise and movement from the dancers, with some fans also arguing that his microphone appeared too quiet.
One viewer wrote: “Clearly the earpieces weren’t working to tell Johannes that not a single person in the country could hear him when the celebs were running up the stairs.”
Another asked why Johannes seemed to start talking before the camera had properly cut to him following each routine.
“It’s barely audible,” they complained.
A third viewer joked that the presenter appeared to be operating on a “7 second time delay”.
Fans Call on BBC to Fix Audio
Others directed their criticism towards the production rather than Johannes himself.
One fan urged bosses to “turn Johannes microphone up”, while another said he repeatedly appeared to begin speaking to camera too early.
A more sympathetic viewer argued that Johannes was being let down by circumstances beyond his control.
“Johannes is lovely, but production is doing him dirty,” they wrote.
They suggested producers should either increase his microphone level or stop him speaking while the contestants are still heading upstairs.
The same fan also defended the wider presenting team, saying all three had done reasonably well for a first live programme and simply needed time to “find their groove”.
They praised Josh for being quick-witted and described Emma as “the glue”.
One Viewer Brands Show a ‘Production Shambles’
Not everyone was prepared to be so forgiving.
Another viewer criticised the overall live presentation, pointing to missed cues, a flat atmosphere in the upstairs area and Johannes’ repeated early links.
They described the show as a “production shambles”.
That verdict represented the opinion of an individual viewer rather than an official assessment of the broadcast.
Other fans were considerably more positive about Johannes’ debut.
One supporter said it felt unusual not seeing him as a professional dancer but praised his transition into hosting.
“What a great premiere,” they wrote, before giving particular credit to Johannes and saying he “did great as a host”.
Johannes Takes Over Balcony Role
The new presenting structure sees Emma and Josh positioned near the judges’ table, while Johannes handles the balcony interviews and score reveals.
His new role therefore places him in the part of the show traditionally associated with Claudia Winkleman.
It is a significant change for Johannes, who became one of Strictly’s best-known professional dancers before stepping away from competitive partnerships to join the presenting team.
Saturday’s show gave viewers their first opportunity to see how the new three-host format would work under live conditions.
Opening Couples Take to the Floor
The live competition began with Big Brother presenter Will Best and professional partner Dianne Buswell.
They performed a Samba to Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ and received 18 points from the judges.
Skeleton racer Tabby Stoecker and newcomer Mark Karmalita followed with a Jive to Katseye’s Animal, scoring 22.
The opening two weeks will not feature a public vote or elimination, in keeping with the series’ early format.
For Johannes, however, attention after the first live show focused less on the scores and more on the technical problems surrounding his links.
Whether the issue came down to microphone levels, cueing or simply the challenges of a first live broadcast, viewers have already made one thing clear — they want the problem fixed before the next show.
