A famous new neighbour of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the Cotswolds delivered a scathing verdict about the couple moving nearby
One of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s famous neighbours has given a brutal verdict of the couple moving nearby. The Duke and Duchesses’ return to the UK, to an undisclosed location in the Cotswolds, has generated a lot of discussion around the country and the world.
And Michael Whitehall, the dad of comedian Jack Whitehall who stars with his son on Netflix’s Travels with My Father star doesn’t seem to pleased. Michael, 86, who lives in the Cotswolds with his wife Hilary, 68, was discussing the arrival of Harry and Meghan on the couple’s podcast ‘The Wittering Whitehalls’ when he was asked by his partner what he thought, not just about their new neighbours, but about their relatives Prince William and Princess Catherine too.
She shared: “The big news is that there are some new residents, allegedly, in the Notswolds, North Oxfordshire no less, Michael, our territory.”

After confirming that she was talking about Harry and Meghan, Hilary quipped: “I haven’t spotted them yet in Waitrose in Banbury, but we live in hope, Michael – well you don’t, because you wouldn’t want to see them, would you?” Prompting Michael to admit: “Well no, probably not.”
Expanding on what he thought of the pair’s move, including a harsh two-word verdict, he remarked: “They’re kind of, for me now, beyond ranting about. I mean they’re not just… They’re non-people really. Not worth my getting upset about. There they are.”
Hilary quipped that his opinions about the Sussexes returning to the UK had been a bit more dramatic shortly after the news was originally announced.
She said before he shared his opinion: “What I’m a little bit disappointed about is that we didn’t get the nuclear rant that I got when it was announced that they were coming back. You’ve tempered it down now.”
Following Michael, whose son Jack reportedly used to be friends with the prince, sharing his opinion, Hilary said jokingly: “We had a bigger rant about the milk carton.”
Whilst Michael wasn’t the biggest fan of Harry and Meghan, he did have some praise for future queen Princess Catherine. He said: “I’m a big fan of that nice girl who is married to the heir to the throne…I think she’s amazing.”
Michael and Hilary’s opining on their new neighbours comes as speculation continues on why exactly the Cotswolds was chosen as the location for Harry and Meghan’s UK base following their return, six years after moving to the USA in 2020.

Speaking about why Harry and Meghan may have chosen to move to the area with their two children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, Channel 5’s royal editor Simon Vigar, author of The Four Wives of Windsor, said that Harry’s decision could have been motivated by several factors, including childhood memories and logistics, given the area’s proximity to Bristol and Birmingham Airport, as well as Cotswold Airport.
He told the Express: “Harry spent a large chunk of his childhood in the Cotswolds when he was staying with his father and still has lots of friends there.
“But the most important thing is it is not London! There are several airports they can use without going anywhere near the capital and attracting attention.”
Fellow royal author Robert Jobson added that the Sussexes’ new location would also mean they wouldn’t be isolated and would be close to people they know.
He said: “They picked that part of the country for a reason. There are family and friends within easy reach, and a wealthy, discreet set already established around Daylesford and Soho Farmhouse. So they will not be short of a social life.”
