King Charles defies the British people for Prince Harry’s sake: ‘A very unwise move for a monarch’
King Charles has been warned that putting Prince Harry’s interests ahead of public sentiment could prove to be a dangerous gamble, as the Duke of Sussex prepares for a reported return to Britain.
The latest development has reignited questions about the relationship between the King, his youngest son and the wider Royal Family, with royal expert Tom Sykes warning that Charles could face a serious backlash if he appears to be giving Harry special treatment.
Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing to spend an extended period in the UK with their children, Archie and Lilibet, after years of building their lives in the United States.
Yet despite the significance of the move, there has been strikingly little public comment from senior members of the Royal Family.
Prince William and Princess Kate have remained silent, while Buckingham Palace has not issued a detailed statement explaining how Harry’s return will affect the family or his relationship with the monarchy.
For Sykes, that silence is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Writing for The Daily Beast, he described it as “very telling” that there had been no reaction from William and Catherine.
“Not a peep!” he remarked, suggesting that the lack of communication could be interpreted in several different ways.
One possibility is that Harry’s stay will ultimately be shorter than initially expected. But Sykes also raised a more troubling theory surrounding the King’s health, while stressing that he does not personally believe Charles is necessarily approaching the end of his life.
The speculation, however, highlights the danger of leaving important questions unanswered.
Sykes argued that Charles now needs to communicate clearly with the British public rather than allowing rumours to fill the vacuum.
He warned that the King has gone too far down the road of transparency to suddenly return to the secrecy that surrounded the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The controversy could become even more explosive if Harry receives visible security arrangements during his return.
Sykes suggested that the sight of the Duke arriving at Heathrow with a police escort could provoke anger among members of the public, particularly after Harry’s long-running legal battle over his security protection in Britain.
And this is where the issue becomes much bigger than a family reunion.
Charles may understandably want to repair his relationship with his son. But any decision that appears to place Harry above ordinary expectations could leave the monarch facing an uncomfortable question: Is he putting his family before the people he swore to serve?
For a monarch, Sykes believes that could be a very dangerous line to cross.
“Defying the people is a very unwise move for a monarch,” the expert warned.
The King therefore faces an extraordinarily delicate balancing act. He must protect his relationship with Harry while avoiding the impression that the Duke is being granted privileges denied to others.
At the same time, William and Kate must navigate a deeply personal family dispute while preparing for their own future as King and Queen.
Harry’s return could therefore become much more than a family homecoming.
It could become a major test of Charles’ authority, William’s patience and the monarchy’s relationship with the British public.
And with the Palace still refusing to say exactly what Harry’s return means for the Royal Family, the biggest question may be whether Charles can welcome his son without appearing to defy the people he serves.
