The 53-year-old, who found national fame as the Go Compare Man, posted a selfie to Instagram with a caption revealing what he “learnt from Strictly”. The star was axed from the Strictly Live Tour after making an inappropriate sexual remark and that led to the cancellation of his BBC Radio Wales show.

“Here’s what I learnt from Strictly,” he wrote in the caption of the post, which was deleted the morning of 10 October. “If you think you’ve built a real connection, you haven’t. You’ve paid for their time – and once the cameras stop, so does the care.”

Then, referring to his self-made fan club Wynne’s Wynners, he added: “But here, it’s real. The people who listen message and alugh with me – you – are genuine. This isn’t showbiz, it’s community. And I’ll always choose that. #TheWynneEvansShow #Wynners #RealConnection”.

Fans have wondered if this is a dig at his former pro dance partner, Katya. Before it was deleted, Wynne’s followers asked if he was fighting with the Russian dancer. One asked: “Does your dance partner never get in touch anymore? If not that is so so sad.”

Another said: “The way you were treated was absolutely disgusting. Your dance partner should have shouted from the rooftops in support of you. You deserve better.”

If the post was an attack on Katya, it was not the only sign that they are feuding, as she hasn’t been engaging with his posts recently, even when he has tagged her.

Wynne’s end on Strictly and with the BBC was controversial. During the show, some fans were upset when Wynne’s behaviour with Katya seemed to make her uncomfortable. After Katya was seen refusing a high-five and batting his hand away when it came around her waist, the pair said it was a joke that went wrong and assured fans all was well.

But during the Strictly Live Tour, Wynne was asked to leave after using a sexual slur to refer to fellow celeb dancer Jamie Borthwick. After he was axed from the tour, his radio show on BBC Radio Wales was also cancelled.

On NBC last month, Wynne opened up about what it was like to lose his livelihood. He said: “At 53 you know, to lose all your singing work, to lose all your television work, to lose your radio show, it’s not an easy thing to have happen to you, but it was my fault.”

Since leaving the BBC, Wynne has set up his own radio show, The Wynne Evans Show, and launched a fan club – for which people have to pay to be a member. As well as entry into regular prize draws, members can get discounts to his shows, a mention on his radio program and the right to call themself a ‘Wynner”.

Wynne describes Wynners as “a community of people bound by kindness, courage and shared stories”. On his website, he added: “Cynics can be cynical. What I’m building with the Wynners goes far beyond what traditional radio offers. We’re creating something listeners describe as ‘their daily tonic’, a morning of fun and friendship.”
