Kelly Stafford previously said that when her romance with Rams’ player Matthew was on and off in college, but she revealed even more of the story that has gone viral this week.
Stafford revealed that she dated her now-husband Matthew Stafford’s backup quarterback during their time at the University of Georgia as a way to piss him off.
And though he and Kelly have a happy marriage now, she told podcast host Kristin Bristowe: “It wasn’t that cute of a relationship at first,” Kelly said. “I hated him, I loved him. I dated the backup to piss him off, which worked — he was the bad boy too. Matthew’s so sweet and a Southern gentleman and all that stuff. And the backup was the complete opposite, and it upset him.”
The mother of four recalled how easy it was to make Matthew jealous because he “lived in the same dorm” as the other athlete.
“They lived in the same dorm room because athletes lived in the same dorm room. He would see my car there. At one point, he waited and followed me into the car. I was like, ‘This is amazing, it’s working.’ I was like, ‘Get out of my car.’ He was like, ‘He’s not right for you.’ I was like, ‘What? You can’t tell me that.’”
Once the story went viral, Ole Miss Lane Kiffin decided to chime in on what Kelly Stafford had to say. He wrote “Maybe…” on X in response to an image of Cox posted alongside the online story.
The name of the backup was never mentioned, but it wasn’t hard to figure out that the most likely candidate would be Joe Cox, who had sat behind Matt Stafford on the depth chart for the majority of his career in Athens.
The other players on that depth chart were Joe Tereshinski, Blake Barnes, and Logan Gray.
In the end, Kelly Stafford got what she wanted and is now married to Matt. They share four children together.

The Los Angeles Lakers secured a thrilling 102-101 win against the Brooklyn Nets. Not only did Reaves have a career-best game, but he also silenced critics with a key alley-oop assist to LeBron James in the closing moments of the match.
With the Lakers holding a narrow 95-100 lead, Reaves made a perfect pass to James, who took full advantage and scored the basket to give the Lakers their final 102 points. It was a crucial play, and one that proved the trust and chemistry between the two players.
After the game, Reaves reflected on the assist. He addressed the online criticism that had followed his previous failed alley-oop assist to the 40-year-old. “Well, I’ve seen some people trolling online laughter Last game the first lob. I tried to throw him. They said he’s 40, and I forgot that, so ‘Y’all enjoy that one,’” Reaves said.
“He’s 40. He can go get it still, so I’m gonna continue to throw it up. I don’t even know if it was that good of a pass. He went, got it, dunked it,” he added.
