Piers Morgan was almost at a loss for words at the King’s statement addressing claims made by Princess Diana’s brother in his explosive tell-all book. Earl Charles Spencer, the brother of the late Princess of Wales, claimed that King Charles said “we’ll forget her soon enough” just days after her death in an extract from his upcoming memoir, titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, published by the Daily Mail. He claimed the monarch subjected him to a “stream of anger” after he insisted Diana would not have wanted Princes William and Harry, then aged 15 and 12, to have to walk in her funeral procession.
Less than an hour after it was published, Buckingham Palace pushed back against the claim, releasing a strong statement on the upcoming book. A spokesperson told the press: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”
Shortly after the palace released their statement, the Uncensored host took to X – formerly known as Twitter – to share his shocked response online. He simply penned: “Wow … [three fire emojis].” The broadcaster went on to share a clip from earlier this week, when he appeared on The Royals Uncensored.
Resharing the clip, he quipped: “Looks like I was bang on…” as the dad-of-four warned that Earl Spencer will “settle scores” in his new book. In the video, he warned: “That I’m told is supposed to be an absolute bombshell book. This is the guy, remember, who made that incredible speech in the abbey when she d!ed.
“He is planning, I think, a book where he’ll settle scores. I’m probably one of them. I’ve had a rocky old ride with old Earl Spencer. But I think that book, coupled with the news of Harry making a documentary and bringing back the ghost of Diana in this way, is designed to be very divisive with the Royal Family. It’s trying to draw a line between the Spencers and the ‘blood family’.”
It didn’t take long for fans to flock to the comments to share their thoughts on the explosive update online. One user penned: “It’s easy to see where Harry gets his lack of respect and manners. The apple didn’t fall far from that tree.”
Another agreed: “King Charles didn’t deny. From what I understand, Spencer has receipts. This isn’t over just becaue the Palace issued a statement.”
Meanwhile, a third pondered: “I have my own feelings on the principals here, but one thing I have learned… never hold anyone to what they have said at times of the deaths of others. People will say the nuttiest things. Just let it go.”
A fourth quipped: “Clearly written by the same person who wrote the Queen’s response to Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview – similar tone just different words. ‘Whilst some recollections may vary…’.”
