EastEnders’ icon quits BBC soap for good three years after character’s dramatic exit

A cherished EastEnders actress has permanently bid farewell to Albert Square, three years following her dramatic exit from the screen. Linda Henry, recognised by millions as the formidable Shirley Carter, has quietly departed the enduring BBC soap opera and dashed any lingering fan expectations of a potential return.
Henry, aged 64, initially arrived at EastEnders in 2006 and remained with the programme for 16 years. Her character Shirley emerged as a pivotal presence in numerous dramatic storylines, including the heartbreaking tale surrounding her son Mick Carter’s disappearance, portrayed by Danny Dyer, reports the Mirror.
Audiences witnessed Shirley’s emotional collapse following Mick’s vanishing at sea during a dramatic Christmas Day episode in 2022. Shirley collected Lady Di the bulldog and departed Walford in poignant scenes, unable to envisage continuing her existence there without her son.
Initially, EastEnders remained silent regarding Henry’s exit, with then-executive producer Chris Clenshaw reassuring viewers in 2023: “So, Linda Henry is currently taking a break from the show. But you know, when she walked off with Lady Di last year, in the wake of Mick’s disappearance, it won’t have been the last you see of her. I can say that for sure.”
However, new details have emerged confirming that Henry’s departure from the show is indeed permanent. A source close to the soap disclosed to The Sun: “Linda quit EastEnders in 2022. The door was left open for a return for Shirley in the future because she was such a fan favourite but it was a final exit. Linda is very private and not one of the actors who wants to be a celebrity and didn’t want a big fuss so a lowkey exit made sense at the time.”
This revelation will surely come as a disappointment to fans who have been eagerly anticipating her comeback. One viewer lamented her absence from the soap last summer, remarking: “I want her to come back for at least one more stint so she can get a proper exit.”
There had been rumours that Shirley might make a reappearance during her son Dean Wicks’ murder trial following the major Six storyline, but these speculations proved unfounded.
Although her time in Walford has come to an end, Henry hasn’t hung up her acting boots. She’s set to appear alongside her on-screen son Danny Dyer in the second season of Sky’s comedy Mr Bigstuff, marking her first television role in three years.
In the series, Henry will portray Pam, a straight-talking mechanic working at a family-run haulage business. The show follows the life of a mild-mannered carpet salesman whose world is turned upside down when his estranged brother Lee (played by Dyer) re-emerges from hiding.
The show’s creator, Ryan Sampson, confirmed the news in an interview with Radio Times: “We’ve got Linda Henry, who was Shirley – Danny’s mum – in EastEnders, which is a lovely little Easter egg for the EastEnders crowd. That I’m really excited about. She is amazing.”
