Paul Whitehouse left BBC Breakfast viewers cringing as he took a swipe at his exasperated wife live on air – telling her: ‘It’s my turn to speak!’

The comedian was joined by his wife Dr Mine Conkbayir as they spoke to hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty about their podcast, I’m ADHD No You’re Not.

Author Mine, 45, opened up about being diagnosed with ADHD when she was 43, and how her husband’s reaction inspired their podcast.

Introducing the segment, Charlie, 63, revealed there had been an off-screen ‘moment’ before their appearance as the couple had argued as to ‘who was going to sit where’.

‘Everything’s just fine, for now,’ Paul, 67, replied, as he tried to laugh off the moment, joking that Naga, 50, and Charlie must go through the ‘same thing every morning’.

Ignoring the faux pas, lecturer Mine went on to explain how she was diagnosed, saying: ‘I was diagnosed when I was 43, it had been diagnosed as complex trauma but there was still something missing.

‘Paul and I got talking and he was like, “No you’re not”, and we were like, “Let’s get this out there, let’s have some discussions and push the debate”.’

Interjecting, Paul turned to his wife to say: ‘Can I just jump in by the way? I wasn’t that dismissive when you were diagnosed…’

Mine was quick to hit back: ‘It’s not about you, though, is it?’, but Paul continued: ‘Well, it is my turn to speak, if I could just get a word in!’

Paul went on to explain: ‘I didn’t just dismiss it and go, “No you’re not”. The reason we came up with that title is because I was a bit sceptical at first and then a load of people I know, comedians, identified as ADHD, or [had been] diagnosed.

‘We went to see a comedy show one night and two of my mates were doing an open mic spot. And, every comedian that came on said, ‘Good evening. I’m ADHD’. And I thought, wow, there really is some connection here, or there’s a profound misunderstanding of what’s going on in their comedic brain.’

Asked by Naga whether Paul had ever considered he too had ADHD, he brushed it off suggesting that having the condition would mean something was ‘wrong’ with him: ‘No, never, there’s nothing wrong with me!’

Nonetheless, Mine went on to describe her husband as a ‘saint’ as she revealed he’d been ‘conscious’ about the issues and experiences she was dealing with.

But Naga didn’t want to let the interjection go, jokingly telling the duo: ‘I do worry about you two rowing a lot…’

Mine retorted: ‘Any marriage councillors who happen to be tuning in do get in touch.’

Viewers at home were left in shock by the ‘car-crash’ interview, hitting out at Paul.

One penned: ‘I generally really like Paul Whitehouse but that BBC Breakfast segment was a car crash full of outdated comments about ADHD and suggestions that it means there’s something “wrong”.’

‘That weird “there’s nothing wrong with me” thing…’ a second pointed out, while a third penned: ‘Please stop talking over each over, in this ADHD item.’

Paul has been with Mine Conkbayir for more than a decade after they met when she was 23, a student, and working in a shop.

They share a daughter, Delilah, but are not married and do not share a home, preferring to live close to one another in North London.

Mine previously revealed that Paul wears a white gold commitment ring engraved with the words ‘I love you, Barn’, a reference to her nickname, ‘barnacle’.

It comes after BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty revealed that she once punched a teenage boy who pinched her bottom on a train.

The presenter was bothered by the boys aged ’15 or 16′ as she travelled on the train who stood ‘near’ to the door as she went to step off the carriage.

Naga – who was a ‘few years older’ than the youngsters – felt her bottom being pinched as she went to get off so she turned and in a moment of shock she punched one of the teenagers.

Speaking to the Daily Mail’s Eden Confidential, Naga, 50, said: ‘Two young boys were there. They were probably about 15 or 16, and they were near the door as I went to get off.

‘And they grabbed my bottom, pinched it, and I turned around and punched one of those boys and swore at them.’

The presenter said her ‘instant reaction’ may not have been ‘right’, and that she feared what would have happened if she stayed on the train.

‘I’m not saying that was right, but it was an instant reaction’

‘And then, straight away after, was the fear that I was a woman on my own only a few years older than them and what would happen next.

‘I was fortunate enough that it shocked them and I was getting off the train and I was comforted by that.’
