Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been “commercialising” their royal titles, according to one royal reporter.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been “commercialising” their royal titles, says one royal commentator. The couple, who moved back to England last month after six years in the US, have pursued a number of commercial ventures in the past few years. Meghan launched her brand As Ever, as well as two seasons of a Netflix show for which she got an Emmy nomination. Meanwhile, Harry released his bombshell memoir Spare in 2023.
Both have spoken several times about their royal lives and their difficult relationships with the Royal Family, which has garnered a lot of criticism. Now, commentators are taking aim at the couple for their UK return after King Charles III confirmed that they would remain non-working royals. Veteran royal reporter and commentator Katie Nicholl joined one of Harry and Meghan’s most vocal critics, Kinsey Schofield, to discuss the couple’s current set-up and their royal status.
She recalled reports that emerged back in 2020 when the couple stepped down from their royal duties, which suggested that Harry had asked Queen Elizabeth II for a sort of half-in, half-out scenario.
“They’ve kind of got what they wanted, haven’t they?” she told Schofield. “They have this half-in, half-out. They’re back in Britain. They’re in the most incredible house. The kids are going to incredible schools. He’s pursuing his charities. She’s going back into acting.
“They’re out here making money, commercialising their royal titles. They have all the perks and privileges and none of the sort of responsibilities that come with it.
“They’re not travelling up and down the country, slogging it out doing royal engagements. That’s William and Catherine and the King and Queen and Princess Anne.
“I think it was always on Harry’s agenda. And I think he’s ultimately got what he wants.”
While King Charles III confirmed that Meghan and Harry would live as private citizens amid their return to the UK, he will reportedly not strip them of their titles.
On The Royals Uncensored, a show that Nicholls fronts, she said she believes the King “just wants peace” and will not strip Harry and Meghan of their titles so as not to disturb that peace.
“I think, if it comes down to anyone stripping titles, it will fall to William to do that. The King is almost leaving the Harry problem for William to inherit now.”
