Gardeners’ World icon Monty Don has left fans devastated after announcing the heartbreaking death of his beloved dog Patti. The TV gardener, 71, shared a series of pictures of the Yorkshire Terrier on Instagram, telling fans: “I have sad news. Our lovely Patti died suddenly this morning after a very short illness.”
He added: “She was much loved, and lit up our lives. We are all heartbroken.” Monty previously lost his dog Peggy in January this year, with the Brittany Spaniel dying just weeks short of her 16th birthday. His dogs Nigel and Nell died in 2020 and 2023, respectively.

Monty’s telly co-stars rushed to share their condolences, with Countryfile star Matt Baker writing: “Thinking of you Monty. As I always say, the reason we love our dogs so much is because the only time they break our hearts is when they leave us.”
Garden historian Stephen Parker added: “Oh Monty. I doubt I will ever get over the sudden loss of my beautiful black Labrador Rupert, who collapsed on Boxing Day morning. They leave such a gap in our hearts.”
One fan said: “My thoughts to all in the Don household – human, canine and otherwise.”
Someone else posted: “So sorry to hear about sweet Patti.”
Monty is now only dog dad to Golden Retriever Ned.
He buried all his late dogs within the woodland area of his extensive garden, and told Saga Magazine: “The garden is theirs as much as mine. It’s a good way of remembering them every day as we walk past – and they’re part of the garden.”
