The Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid finished the regular season on a low note after accomplishing an undesirable feat.
On Sunday, the Chiefs trotted out a skeleton crew for their Week 18 matchup against the Denver Broncos. With the AFC West division title, top seed in the postseason, and first-round bye all already secured, Kansas City opted to rest quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and defensive tackle Chris Jones – among other starters – for the contest.
The Broncos – who needed a win or tie to punch their ticket to the playoffs – made quick work of the Chiefs’ backups, dismantling their division rivals in a 38-0 rout. According to DNVR Sports’ Zac Stevens, the resounding defeat stands as the largest deficit in a Kansas City loss during the Reid era.
To add insult to injury, Sunday’s loss marked the first time that the Chiefs have failed to score in a game during Reid’s tenure in Kansas City. It additionally is just the fourth shutout overall that he’s suffered in his 420 games as an NFL head coach.
In the absence of Mahomes, Chiefs backup quarterback Carson Wentz received the starting nod against the Broncos. The 32-year-old did little to impress under center, however, completing 10-of-17 passes for 98 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Several days prior, Reid expressed utmost trust in Wentz’s abilities, insisting that the nine-year NFL veteran put together a strong week of practice. “Carson has done it before,” he told reporters.

“Going through the whole week process that it takes to put the game plan. To be able to see it and execute it. I think he’s done a good job there. I think the guys have confidence in him which probably tells you the whole story. He’s done well. We look forward to the challenge of playing Denver. Good football team. We know that. Sean [Payton] has done a nice job.”
The Broncos, meanwhile, propelled themselves into the postseason for the first time since 2015 thanks to a near-perfect performance from Bo Nix. The signal-caller finished the evening with more touchdown passes than incompletions, connecting on 26-of-29 passes for 321 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Speaking to CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson after the game, Nix was asked what it meant to break the Broncos’ playoff drought and become the first rookie quarterback since John Elway to take Denver to the postseason. “It means everything,” he replied. “We’ve worked really hard for this.
“Quite honestly, opening the season, nobody expected us to do this but we didn’t really listen to that. We just came out there and put a lot of games together. And we’ve lost a few tough ones, but we’ve also won some big ones. So this team deserves it.”
In the Wild-card round, Nix and the Broncos will face off against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. As for the Chiefs, Kansas City will be awarded a bye as the No. 1 seed.
