Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s latest moves were brutally shut down with two simple words in a heated clash on Good Morning Britain. The ITV show had welcomed Robert Jenrick as he was quizzed by hosts Susanna Reid and Paul Brand on the latest news from the Houses of Parliament.

Susanna asked: “I wanted to ask you very specifically now about yesterday, in the House of Commons. We saw a Home Secretary outlining probably the most radical and hardline crackdown on asylum that we have seen in years. She is cracking down on immigration in a way that even Tories hadn’t done and getting support from Kemi Badenoch and Reform saying that they think it is an application to join their party. You were there. What do you think?” He replied to say that there are some “very good measures” and they “do deserve support because this is almost above party politics.” Mr Jenrick continued: “People across the country are sick of this issue now and they want to see a government secure our borders.”

He then added his honest thoughts, saying: “I don’t think it is enough is the honest answer. I have seen this play out before with very strong, incremental measures, but not sufficient to actually solve the problem.

“This is what the last Conservative party did and that is ultimately why I resigned from that government. Because I didn’t believe it was going to solve the issue.”

Mr Jenrick said that the problem with the small boats is that a “very strong deterrent” is needed. “And that means detaining and deporting everyone who comes here illegally,” he said.

“But to do that, you have to change our human rights laws. You have to leave the European Convention on Human Rights so that you are able to do that.

“What Shabana Mahmood has done is release a whole set of measures, but it does fall short of what we actually need to do. My worry is that this is just the next in a long line of Prime Ministers which will not ultimately be able to deliver.

“I think the public, when these promises are not delivered, will be rightly furious and they deserve better than that.”
