Loose Women sparked outrage on Tuesday as the panel claimed Constance Marten, who was imprisoned for 14 years over the d3ath of her baby, was judged harshly because she is a woman.

Host Christine Lampard, 46, was joined by panellists Mariella Frostrup, 62, Janet Street-Porter, 78, and Brenda Edwards, 56.

On Monday, Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were each sentenced to14 years in prison after being found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter of their newborn daughter.

The decomposed body of their baby, Victoria, was found in a shopping bag in Brighton in 2023 in a case that shocked the nation.

In the ITV studio, talk turned to whether female perpetrators are judged more harshly for their crimes.

Janet claimed that female journalists have tried to ‘get inside the head of Constance Marten’.

‘[They] try to understand what motivated her, what are the rules she led her life by, why did she make the decisions she did?’ Janet said.

‘All the profiles I read of her seemed to come to the conclusion that Constance Marten seemed to live in an almost parallel world, as if she was somehow apart from it.’

Janet suggested that Marten is suffering from ill mental-health and should be treated accordingly, adding: ‘It seems to be that she had a very unusual childhood.’

‘Do we judge her harshly? I think we do. I feel she might be better placed in a psychiatric hospital rather than a conventional prison.’

The presenter continued: ‘We seem to look at the mugshot of Constance Marten and form an opinion about her. I’m not saying it’s not a terrible crime, it absolutely is.’

Brenda then joined in and suggested that Marten’s behaviour can be linked to her apparently ‘neglectful’ upbringing.

‘I think she is a product of her environment,’ she said. ‘It’s a nurture thing. If you feel you’re neglected by your parents in any way, it can go one of two ways.’

Journalist Mariella said that women and men are subject to different levels of media attention when committing the same crimes.

‘Women do get judged differently because it seems to be an abhorrent and unnatural thing that women can commit crimes against children when we’re the ones who bear them,’ she said.

‘When we compare the level of attention and scrutiny that those women get compared to the hundred of thousands of male murd3rers across the globe and even in the UK, you do see a difference in the level of judgement.

‘It becomes incredibly escalated when it comes to women. It definitely has a lot to do with how we judge women, and in fairness it’s also much more exceptional for women to commit these crimes.’

But viewers were livid at what they deemed a minimisation of Marten and Gordon’s crimes, taking to social media to air their fury.

‘Murd3r is murd3r whether it’s carried out by a man or a woman in horrible cases like this one, and the sentence is way too light,’ wrote one watcher.

Another commented: ‘What a load of b****cks. Who gives a s*** about her complex childhood?

‘There is no excuse for k1lling your own child! Throw away the key for her and the ‘father’!

‘His excuse will be that he didn’t have a male role model when growing up. Excuses, excuses, excuses!’

Another echoed the sentiment, writing: ‘She was a mother who let her child down! No sympathy whatsoever. Stop making excuses for these monsters!’

‘Wow all the loose women excusing child k1llers because they’re women? WTF!’ another said.

One echoed the sentiment: ‘If women are capable of anything then they’re capable of neglecting, harming and even k1lling children, and her background isn’t relevant either.’

‘It’s like they’re implying we should have some sympathy for these women?’ said one person. ‘They are being judged harshly because they deserve it!’
