Andy Reid Clears Stance on Sean Payton’s Coaching as Broncos HC Breaks Silence on Patrick Mahomes’ Benching

Factoring all the highs and lows the Broncos have faced over the years, the Mile High City could finally celebrate their team’s success after week 18. Since winning Super Bowl 50, the Broncos haven’t seen the playoffs for 8 years. And that streak may soon come to an end thanks to their Super Bowl-winning head coach, Sean Payton.
Well, the Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid, was the one who chose to give Payton his flowers for the work he has done with the Broncos this season. Speaking to the reporters ahead of their clash in Denver, Reid said, “The Denver Broncos are a heck of a football team. Bidding for, obviously, a playoff spot. Sean’s done a real nice job up there with that team, and as his coordinators have.” Do you know what makes Payton’s job in Denver more impressive?
Before the start of this season, ESPN projected them to win less than six games. While NFL.com predicted the Broncos to close out their season with under 7 wins, none of them had the Broncos fighting for the playoffs this deep into the season. Now, this could have been even sweeter if Denver hadn’t lost to the Chargers and the Bengals on the bounce. After their dominant victory over the Colts 31-13 in week 15, the Broncos had a three-game cushion.

They didn’t even have to wait until week 18 to earn that No.7 seed in the AFC. But it’s the NFL we are talking about. Whatever positives you had over the season could slip through your grip if you aren’t worthy enough. However, Sean Payton believes his team has ‘the grit’ to get over the finish line, “This is part of it. We don’t get to choose. You have to keep fighting. I like the grit on this team and I like the leadership on this team. I think these guys will respond appropriately.”
As Payton waits for his team to step up in week 18, he has some wise words for his final hurdle in the form of the reigning Super Bowl Champions.
Carson Wentz Breaks Silence on Andy Reid Confirming His Exit & Clears Stance on Patrick Mahomes’ Role
Sean Payton praises Andy Reid’s Chiefs ahead of their face-off in Denver
The Chiefs aren’t taking any risk whatsoever in their run to the Super Bowl this year. With the No.1 AFC seed already in their pocket, the Chiefs have decided to rest their three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. See, there aren’t many teams that can afford to make that decision. And Payton believes the Chiefs are the ones who have earned that right to do so, “Credit to Kansas City, Andy and his team. When you go 15-1, then you’re afforded those decisions. I’ve been in that position where your team might need a break here or there. They’ve earned that, and that’s part of the deal.”

With Patrick Mahomes out of the picture for a week, the Chiefs have yet again thrown their hat toward Carson Wentz. He has been given the opportunity to lead his team for the first time in two years. Wentz’s last appearance as a starter came in Los Angeles, that too in a meaningless game when the Rams had already secured their playoff spot. However, Payton is still not ready to take any chances, as he praises Wentz for the veteran he is, “He’s in this league for a reason. He’s big, and he’s strong. He was a first-round draft pick. We spoke during the offseason a little bit with him and his agents. It’s the player, but it’s also everything around it.”
So it’s the Broncos who have the keys to their own success. Failing to win in Denver will put them in a difficult spot against the likes of the Dolphins and the Bengals. But winning against the Chiefs will finally help the Broncos secure a postseason berth they haven’t witnessed in eight years.
