Following on from Deion Sanders’ remarks in relation to his name being linked with the Dallas Cowboys head coach vacancy, a body language expert has given her verdict on his response
A body language expert has claimed Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was “non-committal” in his public response to the Dallas Cowboys head coach approach.
Following the departure of Mike McCarthy, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has already started his search for his successor. And NFL great Sanders has been subject to an approach over the vacancy.
The Buffaloes helmsman helped the Texan outfit to a Super Bowl triumph in his five years with the team during his playing days. Since hanging up his cleats, “Prime Time” has carved out a successful coaching career in college football, with his efforts with Jackson State and Colorado earning him widespread plaudits.
It has been reported by ESPN that conversations between Sanders and Cowboys owner Jones are expected to “continue”, while an interview has not been scheduled. Praising the coach for his work with the Buffaloes, the Dallas GM told 105.3 The Fan: “One of his greatest skills, that he really brings to college, is that he almost has no peer as far as being a recruiter.
“Kids want to come play for him. And he has a way of selling that. That is one skill, that recruiting skill, that is not a huge prerequisite for NFL coaches. One of his greatest values is in that area of putting the team together and getting great talent to come play for him there at Colorado.
“All of that would go into your mind. But make no mistake about it, he’s one of the top people, young and old, that I’ve been around in the NFL.”

Speaking on ESPN on Monday, Sanders duly addressed speculation over the Cowboys post, saying: “To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
Now, body language expert Judi James has given her verdict on the response from “Coach Prime” as speculation continues to abound. Discussing the wording of his comments, particularly the word ‘delightful’, she asserted that the 57-year-old appeared to be keeping his cards close to his chest over the rumors, as he seemed to be careful not to commit to the idea of taking the Cowboys job.
She claimed: “This message shows a very smart use of the chosen key words and a de-personalization technique that is equally polite but non-committal.

“Delightful’ is not a common sporting term and suggests old-school charm. It’s the kind of word Bette Davis would have used to describe a marriage proposal in one of her old movies,(usually one she was about to turn down).
James added: “Intriguing’ is used twice though and it is masterly when it comes to avoiding implication of response. He could be intrigued/interested in the offer, or he could be intrigued as to why anyone would ever imagine he would want to leave his current job. It is also a ‘this is the first I’ve heard of it’ rather than an ‘I was expecting it’ word.
“He also uses the impersonal word ‘You’ rather than ‘I’ when he says ‘After you hang up and think about it’, generalizing and sharing something that was specifically his own experience to seem to take the spotlight off himself a bit.”
