French cinema legend Marina Vlady has died at the age of 88, her family has confirmed.
The celebrated actress, singer and writer passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones and animals, according to a statement given to AFP.
Her children paid tribute to what they described as “a long and beautiful life, well lived”, as condolences began pouring in for a star whose remarkable career stretched across decades and included more than 80 films.
Vlady worked with some of cinema’s most celebrated names, including Jean-Luc Godard and Orson Welles, while earning major international recognition for her own performances.
Cannes-Winning Career Spanned Decades
Among Vlady’s most acclaimed roles was her performance in La Princesse de Clèves, in which she starred opposite Jean Marais.
She also appeared in the Italian production La regina delle Amazzoni and became closely associated with European cinema during one of its most influential periods.
Her role in The Conjugal Bed brought one of the biggest honours of her career when she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963.
The same performance also earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
Vlady later appeared in Jean-Luc Godard’s Two or Three Things I Know About Her, further cementing her place within the French New Wave era.
In 1965, she took on one of her relatively rare English-language roles when she appeared in Orson Welles’s Shakespearean film Chimes at Midnight.
Across her career, Vlady became known for moving between French, Italian and international productions while building an eclectic filmography.
Her Personal Life Also Drew Attention
Away from the screen, Vlady married three times.
Her first marriage was to actor and director Robert Hossein, lasting from 1955 until 1959.
She later married French businessman Jean-Claude Brouillet in 1963, with the couple separating in 1966.
In 1969, Vlady married Soviet poet, singer and songwriter Vladimir Vysotsky.
Their relationship continued until his death in 1980, with the couple spending much of their time between Paris and Moscow.
According to the source, Vlady joined the French Communist Party during this period, which helped make travel to the Soviet Union easier and allowed her to maintain the relationship.

News of Vlady’s death prompted an immediate wave of tributes from admirers and colleagues.
One fan described her as a renowned actress, singer and writer while also referring to her public condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Another tribute remembered her as “a major figure in French cinema” who left behind “a rich and eclectic filmography”.
Friend and actress Cécile Bois also shared a deeply personal farewell.
Bois recalled meeting Vlady in a forest in Russia and spending an afternoon listening to stories about her extraordinary life.
“We met in a forest in Russia, one whole afternoon, where I was lucky enough to have you tell me all about your life,” she wrote.
She also reflected on the personal connections they shared, including actor Robert Hossein.
Bois ended her message by remembering people who had been important to Vlady throughout her life and writing: “Goodbye, Marina. I will keep everything about you.”

Vlady’s death brings to a close a career that crossed national borders, languages and generations.
From acclaimed performances at Cannes to collaborations with some of the most influential directors of the 20th century, she built a body of work that made her one of the recognisable figures of post-war European cinema.
