King Charles faces fresh Highgrove headache as Harry and Meghan’s UK return raises security fears
King Charles is facing a fresh headache surrounding Highgrove as concerns grow over a proposed housing development close to his Gloucestershire estate — just as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare to spend more time in the UK.
The development has sparked opposition among local residents, who fear that building new homes close to the King’s private surroundings could threaten the peace and privacy traditionally enjoyed by the monarch.
The issue has become particularly sensitive given the renewed attention surrounding Harry’s reported return to Britain with Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Residents wanted to protect land near Highgrove
Residents in Tetbury reportedly attempted to prevent the proposed development by seeking to transform nearby fields into public open space.
The Longfurlong Greenfields Association argued that protecting the land would preserve the character of the area and prevent developers from capitalising on its proximity to the King’s home.
However, the Cotswolds District Council rejected the proposal, citing insufficient information regarding the long-term management, maintenance and funding of the proposed public space.
Despite the decision, concerns among residents remain.
Councillor Laura Hall-Wilson stressed that her concerns were not about giving Charles special treatment, but about protecting the unique relationship between the monarch and the local community.
“I am not saying the King should have any say over land use above that of a normal citizen,” she said.
But she warned that the development would be extremely close to Highgrove.
“The people of Tetbury give him peace wherever he goes,” she explained, adding that residents value the tranquillity surrounding the estate and are generally respectful of the Royal Family’s privacy.
The councillor also criticised the motives behind the proposed development, arguing that homes built close to the King’s estate could potentially be marketed at a premium because of their location.
“It does feel like cynical form from the developer to try and build all these homes right next to Highgrove,” she said.
Security concerns add another layer
Peter Martin, chairman of the Longfurlong Greenfields Association, also highlighted security concerns.
The proximity of a new residential development to Charles’ land could create additional challenges for protecting the monarch, particularly if the area becomes significantly busier.
The concerns come at an awkward moment for the King.
Reports have suggested that Harry and Meghan are preparing to spend an extended period in Britain, meaning Charles could soon find himself dealing with an increasingly complicated family and security picture.
The Sussexes are not expected to resume royal duties, and their businesses will reportedly remain based in the United States.
They are also expected to retain their Montecito home.
Nevertheless, their increased presence in Britain could place greater attention on the locations where Charles and other senior royals spend their private time.
For Charles, Highgrove has long represented a quieter retreat away from the intense pressures of royal life.
The possibility of new homes appearing close to the estate therefore strikes at something much deeper than a simple planning dispute.
It raises questions about privacy, security and whether the peaceful surroundings the King has enjoyed for decades can be preserved.
