The broadcasting legend hinted he would be leaving the show at the Super Bowl in February.
He broke down in tears during a segment on his Hall of Fame career.
Johnson has now made the decision to leave, following 31 years with the TV team, starting in 1994.
“As you know, probably the most fun I’ve ever had in my career, and that’s counting Super Bowls and National Championships, was at Fox Sports,” Johnson told Cowherd.
“I have an absolute ball with my friends on the set, and the best friends I’ve ever had there with Fox.
“And I’ll tell you on top of that, I love working for Eric Shanks, our CEO, and our producer Bill Richards.
“But I’ve made an extremely difficult decision.
“I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years, and I’ve decided to retire from Fox, and I’m going to miss it.
“I’m going to miss all the guys, and I’ll see them occasionally, but it has been a great run starting back 31 years ago.”
Johnson will leave behind Michael Strahan, Howie Long, Curt Menefee, and Terry Bradshaw.

A third commented: “What a career on Fox NFL Sunday.”
Johnson has been working in the studio of Fox NFL Sunday since joining the company.
That came after he retired as head coach of the Cowboys.
He had spent the previous four seasons with the Dolphins.
There had been rumors he might leave the program over the years, but he always stuck with it.
“I tried to bring out the best in everybody that I came into contact with,” Johnson added.
“I don’t care what their role was, I don’t care how important they were.
“I don’t care if they were a Hall of Fame player or an intern on our set, I tried to bring out the best in everybody.”
Johnson is also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
