Danny Miller, widely recognised for his long-running portrayal of Aaron Dingle in Emmerdale, has recently opened up about an unexpected behind-the-scenes change to his character’s storyline that most fans had no idea ever happened. During a candid conversation on the Off Script podcast, the actor, who first took on the role back in 2008 and has returned to it several times over the years, reflected on his most recent comeback to the iconic British soap in 2023. As the discussion unfolded, co-host Kelvin Fletcher praised Danny for his impressive track record and numerous accolades earned throughout his soap career. That prompted Danny to share a surprisingly humorous yet rather painful memory — an off-screen incident that ended up forcing the production team to alter Aaron Dingle’s original script shortly after his return. It was a moment that not only caught viewers unaware but also offered a rare glimpse into the spontaneous decisions that can reshape a character’s journey in a show as fast-paced and dynamic as Emmerdale.

“I have to actually be honest, when I went back to Emmerdale a couple of years ago, it was a long time ago that I was winning all those awards so I thought I’ll box them up,” he shared, joking: “I don’t want to get rid of them, I might auction them off if I get skint on eBay!”
After deciding to put them in his loft, however, things took a dangerous turn, Danny recalling: “When I came back down the ladder, I stepped back on my knee and my knee went back the other way, and I did my ACL [anterior cruciate ligament]!”

Amid the desperate situation, he rang now-former Emmerdale producer Jane Hudson to suggest they rewrite his return to the soap.
“I said, ‘Because my knee’s gone, I can’t walk’,” he continued. “So they wrote it in that I’d been beaten up badly and done my knee in, because I couldn’t walk for six weeks.
“So she said, ‘How did you do it?’ And I said, ‘I’m not going to answer that question… I stepped off a ladder’.”

Danny admitted that he took a while to reveal the full truth to his colleagues, and now it’s a “running joke” on set that he got an injury by putting his awards away.
In other news, the actor announced last month that he and wife Steph Jones are expecting their third child together, sharing in a post: “Three is the magic number.”
