Dan Walker announced the tragic death of one of its longest-serving staff members, leaving colleagues and viewers devastated. Speaking live on Channel 5, the broadcaster revealed that camera operator, Mark Vinall, has “sadly died at home after a long illness,” prompting an emotional tribute online. In a statement shared on X, the team at 5 News said: “The team at 5 News would like to pay tribute to one of our own legends.
“One of our longest-serving camera operators, Mark Vinall, has sadly died at home after a long illness. Many of the excellent pictures you have seen on this programme over the past 20 years were filmed by Mark. He was brilliant at his job and a delight to work with. Mark loved 5 News and we loved him. We will miss him dearly.” Fans also chimed in on X, sharing their own tributes to the much-loved crew member.

One wrote: “Rest in Peace, Mark. He was a brilliant cameraman and an even better bloke. He loved @5_News and we loved him. Condolences to his family from the 5 family.”

Vinall worked as a freelance lighting cameraman and editor for more than 30 years, with a significant portion of his career dedicated to Channel 5.
Many of the striking footage and pictures seen on 5 News over the past two decades were filmed by him, with colleagues noting that his talent behind the camera helped shape the look of the programme.
He wasn’t limited to one newsroom, either. Vinall also freelanced for the BBC — including the prestigious Natural History Unit — and Sky, and contributed to well-known wildlife series such as Deadly 60 and The Really Wild Show.
Away from his professional achievements, he was described by colleagues as an innovative, fun-loving adventurer and animal lover, earning a reputation not just for his skill, but for the warmth and enthusiasm he brought to every project.
Tributes also poured in from colleagues within the industry. TV star Katherine Nash, presenter and reporter for ITN and 5 News, wrote on X: “A fitting tribute to a man we’ll miss dearly. A sad day for the 5 News family.”
Away from the newsroom, Dan also faces a busy schedule as he fronts a fresh instalment of his Channel 5 series with Helen Skelton.
The pair have reunited for a second run of Yorkshire Great and Small, exploring rural life and taking on hands-on challenges — including milking cattle at a North York Moors farm.
In a sneak peek, Dan joked with viewers: “We have a deal here, no pooing while I’m here ok?!” before sampling ice cream made on site.
