Black Family Can’t Bury Young Dad Because His Accused Killer is His Insurance Beneficiary
Nationwide — Antonio Frost Jr., a 24-year-old African American man from East Point, Georgia, was killed in a domestic shooting on February 2nd. Now, his family struggles to lay him to rest due to a delayed life insurance payout because the alleged shooter is his girlfriend, D’azyia Elliott, who is his insurance beneficiary.
Frost’s aunt, Amy Jackson, recalls the heartbreaking moment she learned of his death. “I received a phone call, and I could hear my sister screaming in the phone. ‘Amy, he’s gone, he’s gone,’ those words will live with me.” she said, according to WSBTV.
The shooting, which took place at The Woods at Camp Creek, reportedly occurred after an argument over finances between Frost and his girlfriend, who is also the mother of his two children.
Jackson described Frost as a hardworking father, having a warehouse job during the day and driving for DoorDash at night. Jackson said, “My nephew is such a good father, good provider. No one in this world can say a mean thing about him. We call him a big teddy bear.”
Frost’s girlfriend, D’azyia Elliott, is now in jail, facing charges of murder and aggravated assault. However, due to her being listed as the beneficiary, the family cannot access the life insurance payout until the case is concluded, which could take months or even years.
“Insurance companies, their whole purpose is to pay out the family or beneficiary, so they will do everything they can within their power to make sure it’s going to the appropriate hands,” said Emanuel Jones, president of Jones & Co. Wealth Strategies.
Jones recommended naming trusts as beneficiaries to avoid similar issues, emphasizing that changes cannot be made after death.
Jackson hopes her nephew’s death will raise awareness about domestic violence and the challenges men face in these situations. She said, “Make sure you know the person you’re dealing with. Make sure you truly understand because once you lose something in life, it’s a deep pain.”
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. It has so far raised over $4,200.
