“I drove into the desert… and didn’t know if I’d come back.” Once one of TV’s most recognisable stars, John Barrowman vanished from the spotlight almost overnight. Cancelled. Silenced. Left battling dark thoughts he never shared — until now. What really happened behind the scenes? And how did he claw his way back when the industry turned its back?

John Barrowman was alone in his car, deep in the Colorado Desert, when his thoughts turned terrifyingly final.

John Barrowman found himself being pushed out the limelight after revelations about his lewd behind-the-scenes antics while working on TV shows such as Doctor Who and its spin-off, TorchwoodJohn Barrowman found himself being pushed out the limelight after revelations about his lewd behind-the-scenes antics while working on TV shows such as Doctor Who and its spin-off, Torchwood

The 58-year-old entertainer — once a fixture of British television and theatre — was contemplating how to end his life when his phone suddenly chimed. A fan had requested a personalised video message on the Cameo app.

Instinct took over. The performer smiled, switched on the camera, and recorded the message there and then.

“I don’t like to disappoint people,” he said.

That unexpected interruption pulled him back from the brink. He drove home to Palm Springs. But it was not the first time — nor the last — that he had driven into the desert to think about dying.

Only weeks ago, Barrowman spoke candidly about those moments.

“I drove out there quite a few times to figure out how I was going to do it,” he said.
    “I didn’t tell anybody.”

Sitting behind the wheel, head in his hands, the thoughts spiralled.

“You’re looking at the dashboard thinking, ‘How do I get out of this? I don’t see a way.’ You think, ‘Can I drive into something? Pull into traffic? Drive off a cliff?’”

    Then came the grim irony.

“Unfortunately,” he added, “I’ve got a Tesla. It stops.”

This was the psychological fallout of being cancelled in 2021.

A born showman — a man whose entire identity was bound up in performance — suddenly found himself unwanted, his career abruptly frozen after allegations about his off-camera behaviour surfaced.

Barrowman was dragged into a Guardian investigation into Noel Clarke in 2021 – his former co-star on Doctor Who – who faced allegations of bullying and sexual misconductBarrowman was dragged into a Guardian investigation into Noel Clarke in 2021 – his former co-star on Doctor Who – who faced allegations of bullying and sexual misconduct

Revelations about his lewd antics behind the scenes of Doctor Who and Torchwood saw him swiftly removed from projects and dropped as a judge on ITV’s Dancing On Ice.

Of the BBC, he now says:
“They never came to me. They never asked anything. They just shut it all down.”

The phone stopped ringing. The work dried up. He felt, he says, “completely blacklisted”.

Depression followed — and thoughts of suicide soon after.

Four years on, the picture looks very different.

Barrowman is back in Scotland, touring a new festive stage show, Camp as Christmas. Performances in GlenrothesEdinburgh, and a grand finale at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall are close to selling out — a far cry from the bleak period when previous tours were quietly abandoned due to poor ticket sales.

“The audience is still there,” he said recently. “The fanbase is still there — and that means everything.”

Originally from Mount Vernon, Glasgow, Barrowman moved to the US as a child before building a career that spanned West End musicals, pantomime, and prime-time television on both sides of the Atlantic.

‘He gave up at the first opportunity and wasted a space that another person could have taken, so it was very disappointing,’ said the show’s chief instructor Mark Billingham‘He gave up at the first opportunity and wasted a space that another person could have taken, so it was very disappointing,’ said the show’s chief instructor Mark Billingham

That trajectory derailed dramatically in May 2021, when he became embroiled in a Guardian investigation into former Doctor Who co-star Noel Clarke, accused by multiple women of bullying and sexual misconduct.

As part of that reporting, a resurfaced 2014 YouTube video described Barrowman repeatedly exposing himself on set — behaviour he had long framed as harmless “tomfoolery”.

In an era reshaped by MeToo, that defence no longer held.

Barrowman has consistently argued three points:
    that the behaviour occurred during productions involving nudity;
    that no one complained at the time;
and that the culture of the 2000s was very different.

Yet his own 2008 autobiography Anything Goes details repeated flashing incidents — including on Torchwood — described as morale-boosting jokes.

While no suggestion was made of predatory intent, there was a complaint, and in 2008 an executive producer ordered him to stop.

Even years later, the pattern continued. As recently as January 2021, Barrowman appeared on Lorraine wearing a sequinned jockstrap and offered — twice — to reveal it on air.

Just four months later, his career collapsed.

Speaking on the Inside of You podcast, Barrowman admitted the silence from friends and colleagues hurt deeply.

“People were scared to reach out,” he said.
“What upset me was that people I would have been there for weren’t there for me.”

Asked whether he now believes his behaviour was wrong, he replied:
“It was probably daft and dumb. I wouldn’t do it now.”

Attempts at a comeback were uneven. A hoped-for revival via Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins ended abruptly when he quit just 32 minutes into the programme — a move criticised by the show’s chief instructor Mark Billingham, who said Barrowman had “wasted a space”.

Viewers were unimpressed — particularly when reports emerged of a £30,000 fee.

    Yet theatre remains his refuge.

Following therapy and intense self-reflection, Barrowman has chosen to rebuild where he feels most alive: on stage, face-to-face with an audience.

“They can say what they like online,” he says of critics.
    “Delete. Delete. Delete.”

His current tour spans 16 venues, with near three-hour cabaret performances and premium meet-and-greet packages — and next year he plans two major tours with My Life In Musicals.

Scottish entertainment journalist Beverley Lyons believes his resilience defines him.

“When a performer gets cancelled, they either disappear — or they stand up and face the music,” she said.
“John was never going to hide.”

In a final twist, Barrowman recently reunited with the fan who ordered the Cameo video that saved him that day in the desert.

“I told them the truth,” he recalled.
“That message stopped me killing myself.”

    The fan was stunned.

    “You thanked me,” Barrowman said.
    “But I was thanking you.”

There is life after cancellation, it seems.

And for John Barrowman — slowly, tentatively — it is beginning to resemble life before

BBC Breakfast Hit With A Wave Of Complaints As Furious Viewers Spot A Blunder And Demand To Know How It Happened

BBC Breakfast remembers photographer Martin Parr

During Tuesday’s episode of BBC Breakfast, viewers were quick to spot a minor error in one of the show’s segments.

Presenters Sally Nugent and Jon Kay were on hand to deliver the latest headlines, including the latest on the harrowing events at Bondi Beach on Sunday (December 14).

When they returned to the show after a brief break, the stars shared a brief rundown of the topics they’d be discussing later in the programme.

One of which included celebrating 250 years of author Jane Austen, as a clip from the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice played on-screen.

However, as the text displayed the celebrated author’s name, people watching noticed a spelling error. Instead of the correct spelling of ‘Austen’, the programme had written it as ‘Austin.’

Unaware of the mistake, Sally Nugent could be heard saying: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen stories still grab readers and viewers more than two centuries after she lived. We will be celebrating her 250th birthday.”

It wasn’t long before people took to social media to comment on the blunder, with many expressing bafflement over the mistake.

One person on X said: “#bbcbreakfast Austin? Really #bbc? Howay, even I know it’s AUSTEN.” Someone else wrote: “It’s so easy to say that standards at the BBC have slipped… #BBCBreakfast”

Another jokingly asked: “Jane who? @BBCBreakfast #bbcbreakfast” While one viewer added: “Oh look, it’s just our national broadcaster unable to spell the name of one of our most famous authors. #bbcbreakfast #janeausten #JaneAusten250”

However, it seems as though the BBC noticed the mistake as when the segment reappeared later on, it had been amended.

This week, viewers saw presenter Sally Nugent highly emotional as she spoke to  Sir Chris Hoy on the programme, who spoke about his cancer diagnosis.

The Olympian was diagnosed with prostate cancer and announced in 2024 that it was incurable. Chris’ wife, Sarra, has multiple sclerosis (MS) and the pair have since filmed a documentary.

Titled Sir Chris Hoy: Cancer, Courage and Me, the documentary gives people a glimpse into his journey and aims to inspire others.

Speaking to Chris during Monday’s show, Sally admitted it was “one of the most inspirational stories I have ever worked on”.

The BBC star commented: “I have to be honest with you. I remember sitting in that appointment with your consultant in London when you were going through the latest situation with your health, and going through, you know, what might be next and all of those things.

“And sitting there thinking, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m in here. I can’t believe I’m in this room’.”

Sarra added: “We think the same, we can’t quite believe it.”

Sophy Ridge and Wilfred Frost interrupted their show on Sky News to confirm a huge rise in the UK’s unemployment figures. In a huge blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves , unemployment has risen by 5.1%. Looking earnest Frost announced: “We want to get you to some breaking news here…Unemployment figures have just been released for the month of October.” He then welcomed the channel’s business and economic correspondent Gupreet Narwan to analyse the huge increase.

“Just in a bit of context – that’s the highest unemployment rate now we’ve had since early 2021 so the deep, dark days of the pandemic, of the lockdown. And give you a sense of what’s happened over the past year, when we talk about 5.1% unemployment rate in the year to November, about 171,000 staff roles have disappeared from payrolls. Now that’s a mixture of people retiring and not being replaced. It might be people who have actually been sacked. It might be employers just not kind of pulling up the ladder on on graduate recruitment, but 171,000, 38,000 on the month alone. So this is quite significant,” NArwan explained.

She continued: “(It) is a lot more competitive out there to get a job. So not only are there more people now looking for work, but vacancies, we look back to kind of 2022, they’ve been pretty much consistently shrinking quarter on quarter.

“We’ve had a bit of let up here and there. Most recently, the figure showed us the vacancies were flat, but they’re still lower than they were back in 2022.

“The best way to really think about that is to look at the ratio of unemployed person to jobs now. There are 2.5 unemployed people for every job that’s out there. This time last year, we were talking about 1.8, and I think it’s just worth saying that all of this is really hurting young people most, because it’s entry level work.

“If you look at those vacancies, it’s at the entry level that they’re really shrinking. There’s a lot going on there. We know things like retail, hospitality, which have been really hit hard by employment taxes, by next increases, they have been shrinking, and they’re the ones that give opportunities to young people often also have graduate jobs,” she explained.

Close up of Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer looking serious

Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer have been dealt a blow with an increase in unemployment figures (Image: Getty)

“There’s a lot going on structurally in the employment market, about with AI, maybe next has encouraged some businesses to accelerate investment in AI, because now employment is so expensive.

“But there’s loads going on here, and this is before we even get to talk about all the people that aren’t even showing up in the employment figures because they’re not even looking for work,” she said.

Frost interjected: “To summarise…the first line of the ONS statement says the overall picture continues to be one of a weakening labour market.

“And the statement goes on to say the fall in payroll, the increase in unemployment has been seen, particularly among some younger age groups. So completely agree with that summary.”

Strictly Come Dancing’s Balvinder Sopal has revealed the moment she knew her time on the BBC dance competition was over. On Sunday night (December 14), the EastEnders star and her dance partner Julian Caillon found themselves in the dreaded dance-off against Amber Davies and Nikita Kuzmin. On the show, both couples performed their routines again, with Balvinder and Julian taking to the stage with their Salsa to Gloria Estefan’s hit Rhythm Is Gonna Get You and Get On Your Feet.

Meanwhile, Amber and Nikita reprised their couple’s choice to Raye’s cover of Fly Me To The Moon. But ultimately, all four judges voted to unanimously eliminate the soap star from the competition, meaning Amber and Nikita will join Karen Carney and Carlos Gu, and George Clarke and Alexis Warr in the live final

On Monday night (December 15), the soap star and her dance partner joined Fleur East on the sister spin-off show, It Takes Two, where they talked about the dreaded dance-off in detail. It was at this point that the actress confessed to the single moment that she knew it was “game over” for the couple on the ballroom show.

When asked how she felt going up against the West End star, Balvinder confessed: “Amber is a wonderful, wonderful contestant, and a wonderful woman. She is of a different calibre. So going up against Amber… honestly, was game over for us because we’re not of that level, we’re not of that standard. I certainly wasn’t.

“I came into the competition as a novice, I couldn’t literally work the rise and fall of a Waltz step, I didn’t know anything really.” The pro dancer interrupted with: “No matter who we’re in the dance off with, we always give it our best, we do what we do, and we try to top our previous dance from before.”

The TV favourite went on to share all the positives she has gained from competing on the show, the biggest one being her confidence. She gushed: “As the competition went on, my confidence just grew, and I think it is down to our partnership and the way that we work together.”

After watching the emotional interview, some fans were convinced that the soap star “threw Amber under the bus” for her comments on the show. One user asked: “Did Balvinder just completely throw Amber under the bus with that ITT interview? [grimace emoji]”.

Another agreed: “Balvinder said Amber was a different calibre and she entered as a complete novice. It felt very unnecessary… very shady? [grimace emoji] Especially when it’s going to make the pile on for Amber even worse.”

A third pointed out: “Oh dear, Balvinder was my favourite UNTIL she commented on Amber. Nikita said ‘Be Kind’, but Balvinder was a bad loser and threw Amber under the bus!! We know she’s of pro level, we really don’t care, she’s fun to watch! Amber was a last-minute replacement.”

Meanwhile, others praised Balvinder for her exit interview, with one gushing: “Yes, Balvinder, you absolutely should be proud of yourself, the way you handled yourself with grace & dignity and fought through the negativity.” Another echoed: “What a lovely, genuine lady Balvinder is & partnered with such a gentleman, Julian! Well done, both of you, pupil & teacher, be proud!!!”

Posting on Instagram earlier this month, Ginger Johnson declared: “Next year I’m saddling up and galloping off on tour all over the UK with my brand new live spectacular SHOW PONY!”.

“You’ve seen me in the Masterchef Kitchen, you’ve seen me on the Drag Race runway, now it’s time to see me in my element: outrageous, untamed and completely off the reins.

“Expect hoof-stomping original songs, whip-smart comedy, and enough glitter to choke a shetland. If unbridled Queer joy is your bag – this show is the safest bet in town.”

With the final now in sight and the final three couples confirmed, Strictly Come Dancing fans are now guessing who will be lifting the Glitterball Trophy this weekend. Yesterday, Amber Davies and her professional partner Nikita Kuzmin survived the dreaded dance-off against EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal and Julian Caillon to book a spot in Saturday’s final. They will be joining social media star George Clarke and his pro partner Alexis, and ex-footballer Karen Carney and her partner Carlos Gu. Fans have now “spotted a clue” ahead of the final weekend, which could potentially “reveal” who will win this year’s trophy.

According to The Sun, on Reddit, someone claimed in a thread that George Clarke will win, arguing: “George has more than 3 million followers across his socials. It’s game over.”

Another person similarly echoed: “I think it’s pretty obvious from the past few weeks that Amber hasn’t got a hope in hell of winning. I think George has the bigger, more engaged, fans so it will likely be him.”

A third also chimed in: “I think George will win but I hope it’s Karen.” A fourth also said online: “George has got a huge fanbase, he will get the votes.”

Meanwhile, West End star Amber Davies has realised “there’s so much kindness in the world” after reaching the final of Strictly Come Dancing.

She said in a video clip on social media: “I just want to come on here and say in the close to a decade I’ve been in the public eye, I have never experienced an outpouring of love the way I have in the last 48 hours.

“To make the Strictly final is… I’m speechless. From how it started, I genuinely can’t believe I’ve made it to the end.”

Amber continued: “I think I’ve needed to do Strictly to realise there’s so much kindness in the world.

“We’re strong when we’re kinder. I’m going to enjoy every single second of this week. I’m rooting for George, I’m rooting for Kaz and I’m just there to enjoy the ride.”

Ruth Langsford has issued an emotional marriage update after her split from co-star husband Eamonn Holmes. In a bombshell new confession, Ruth said that despite the difficult situation, she “hasn’t even been put off marriage”, despite separating from Eamonn after 14 years of being husband and wife. Eamonn has already moved on with his new girlfriend Katie Alexander, but Ruth has been discovering a new single life.

Ruth, 65, said: “I haven’t been put off having a relationship. I haven’t even been put off marriage, but I’m definitely not actively looking. Part of that is because I’ve realised I’m actually quite good on my own.” She’s also in therapy, confessing: “My counsellor has probably seen us on TV, but she doesn’t know either of us, so doesn’t get involved and doesn’t judge.”

65-year-old Eamonn looked loved up with his 43-year-old girlfriend Katie last month when they stepped out at a charity event together. While Eamonn was seen using a walker as he made his way up the pavement, he remained arm in arm with Katie.

He did, however, tell The Sun: “I wish Ruth all the best, she deserves it.”

The pair had been together for 27 years, but shortly after the break-up Eamonn was spotted out with mum-of-three Katie.

Speaking in 2024, he said: “I’m going to be with Katie this Christmas. I’ve never not been in the UK for Christmas, but maybe one year I’ll go away abroad.”

Ruth said of divorcing in her 60s: “I think you can surprise yourself – you have that moment where you panic, panic, panic and the age thing comes into it. You think, ‘Oh no I’m 65 what will I do?’

“But like the song, do I crumble? Do I lay down and die? Or do I survive? You just have to get up and dust yourself off and whatever that new path is going to be, you have to deal with it.”
