Peter Kay speaks about painful surgery as part of his new book which is out today

Peter Kay has revealed he had emergency surgery on a giant kidney stone and a stent needed to be fitted after it caused “major trauma” to his urethra.

Writing in his new book Peter Kay’s Diary, his March entry documented a troubling and painful time for him several years ago, but in typical comical fashion.

Comedian Kay, 52, said he was wearing a covid mask on a train from London Euston to Wigan when he felt severe stomach pains and had to rush to use the toilet. Two days later he had throbbing pains in his lower back and googled his symptoms, which suggested a kidney stone so went to get medical attention.

Kay writes: “Fast forward 24 hours, and my suspicions were confirmed via a CT scan at the local hospital. It turned out I had a big stone block in the exit of my right kidney.

“He(urologist) reassured me, but said I needed emergency surgery to remove the kidney stone, which would also involve having a stent fitted at my urethra in order to maintain my kidney functions. F**k a duck.

“My pre op bloods confirmed his suspicions that, apparently, my kidney functions were deranged. Well, that’s how the nurse delicately put it. As much as I was shocked, I was also relieved and felt vindicated, as I actually had something wrong with me, and it wasn’t just hypochondria.

“However, kidney stone pain is legendary, and I was starting to sob and make the occasional high pitched whining sound, like when you fire an air rifle at a dog’s testicles.”

Worse was to come for Peter though, when he was told the operation would involve a small camera fitted with a laser entering his body to “blast” the kidney stone away.

The doctor told him there would be no need for any cuts or incisions as the camera would be going in another way.

Kay added: “Then the penny dropped with a huge realisation. Oh, my God, he means he’s going in through the hole at the end of my penis. My world collapsed. Red lights flashed in my head. He can’t go up there? It’s out of bounds, private land. Area 51. A camera won’t fit up there, let alone one carrying a laser. Was this guy on glue?”

Sadly for comedian Kay the doctor was serious and that is how the operation took place, but not before his anesthetist had also asked for a selfie shortly before putting him to sleep.

The stone was removed and Kay was left in serious pain for a week when he used the toilet, until he had to return to remove the stent via the same way the camera had gone into his body.

Kay added: “The urologist said I didn’t need any pain relief. He said it’d be a walk in the park, though I don’t know which parks he walks through.

“The urologist advised me to breathe deeply, in and out, then grabbed my penis like he was grabbing a snake and squeezed it, which caused my eyes to bulge like a cartoon.”

The urologist then advised him to slow his breathing although Kay says he was lucky he didn’t get headhunted by this point, such was the pain. A small hook was then used to remove the stent and Kay “howled” in pain.

He added: “It was painful and unpleasant and a dreadful experience I never wish to repeat. Ever!”

According to the NHS, Kidney stones can develop in 1 or both kidneys and most often affect people aged 30 to 60. They’re quite common, with more than 1 in 10 people affected.

Kidney stones are usually found in the kidneys or in the ureter, the tube that connects the kidneys to your bladder. They can be extremely painful, and can lead to kidney infections or the kidney not working properly if left untreated.

Symptoms include pain in the side of your tummy (abdomen) or severe pain that comes and goes like Kay felt on the train.

In the “cheery” September chapter of the book, the Phoenix Nights creator also recalls his honeymoon disaster, as he and wife Susan were married just a few days before 9/11 and were in Mexico when the disaster unfolded.

Kay thought it was a movie when he first saw it on TV before the realisation hit and the holiday resort took on an eerie state.

Kay writes: “The whole resort was flung into grief, as you’d expect. We really wanted to go back home, but thousands of planes were grounded. It was an unprecedented move to thwart any further attacks from hijacked planes.

“The feeling was eerie. All joy evaporated. All music stopped. It was a surreal juxtaposition; we were in such idyllic surroundings while all this tragedy was happening. We tried to continue with normal holiday activities, but we felt guilty.”

Kay said the world changed for years afterwards and when children came into their lives he tried to shield his young kids from 9/11 and would change TV channels if a programme came on mentioning it as there was no real explanation for what happened.

He added: “Sometimes the world can be a horrible place, and it ruined our honeymoon. We got back home six days later than scheduled. We were so grateful to get a flight back. We’d been waiting in a packed airport in Cancun for seven hours.

“I’ll never forget the passengers clapped and cheered when we landed in Manchester. Such a relief to be back on terra firma, though no one would feel safe for a long time to come. F**king Al-Qaeda.

BBC issues new statement as Strictly phone vote row rumbles on

People are not happy!

The BBC has shared a statement after Strictly Come Dancing came under fire after scrapping the phone vote for the 2025 series.

The glitzy BBC One show is well underway, with fans now unable to vote via phone for the first time in the show’s history. Uproar ensued when it was announced that the Beeb has axed premium rate phone voting.

Strictly phone voting scrapped for 2025 series

Last month, the BBC announced that phone voting for Strictly Come Dancing would be scrapped. Instead, fans wanting to vote for their favourite contestant have to create an account on the BBC website. Only then are they able to vote for their favourite couple.

Defending the decision at the time, the broadcaster said phone voting is an “outdated system and also expensive to run”.

They added: “Online voting has become the go-to choice for most viewers. In fact, the overwhelming majority of votes for the last Strictly series were cast online. And earlier this year, BT, the company that provided these phone services for the BBC, announced it would stop offering them in early 2025.”

Complaints pour in

Viewers and charities waded into the row. Dennis Reed, director of the campaign group Silver Voices, told The Telegraph: “Once again, the BBC is showing that it treats its loyal older viewers with contempt. Older people who are not online, but enjoy participating through phone polls, are being disenfranchised.”

Dennis continued: “This is a thinly concealed plot to force all viewers online and into iPlayer, in preparation for an early end of terrestrial TV, which the BBC is obsessed with achieving.”

Caroline Abrahams, charity director for Age UK, also agreed. She said: “Being unable to phone in to a BBC vote may seem trivial. But if you’re an older person who has enjoyed participating in this way and you aren’t online, it may feel like another hurtful example of the world moving on and leaving you far behind.”

Viewers, too, shared their views. They feel the decision ostracises those not confident when it comes to using smartphones and the internet.

One said: “Why did Strictly abandon the phone in voting? So many cannot vote without internet access or indeed ability.” Another added: “Getting rid of the voting by phone is so wrong.” A third said: “You have just alienated a huge part of your audience. I cannot imagine my elderly mother, and thousands like her, able to log on to register a vote on her favourite programme.”

BBC shares new statement

However, now the Beeb has shared a new statement. And it has doubled down on the fact that the decision wasn’t one that was in its hands.

“We understand that the changes to the premium-rate phone vote are disappointing for some viewers. We know fans of Strictly who like to vote by phone will be impacted. And it’s not something we would have chosen.

“The decision to discontinue such services was made by BT, who previously supplied this to service providers working with the BBC and other broadcasters. We have carefully explored phone voting alternatives that would be in line with Ofcom regulations, including ensuring that the Strictly vote is timely and reliable.

“Unfortunately, no viable replacement is available. And so voting will now take place online for all BBC programmes. Online voting is already the most popular method on BBC shows, with the majority of votes in the last series of Strictly cast this way.”

April Windsor has been working for Ray Walters, dropping drugs and now dealing. But all the time we thought he was the big boss, in fact someone else has been pulling the strings.

Celia Daniels has been revealed as not just a farmer, but instead the mastermind of a drug empire, Ray’s boss and his mum.

After Leo was hospitalised for accidentally ingesting some of April’s pills, it all kicked off. Celia stepped in to stop April confessing.

She confronted her at the hospital and when playing Mrs Nice Guy didn’t work, she turned nasty and slapped April, calling her an “ungrateful little wretch”. She then added: “You lost Ray thousands of pounds, and this is how you repay him?”

Celia revealed then threatened April. She said they’d come after her family if she told the police the truth. April went along with the lie.

Later, Celia reduced Ray to a cowering wreck as she called him “a useless, pathetic, weak little man”. The next day he wished Celia dead and told her he hated her.

Exclusive poll reveals fans aren’t impressed

In a new poll run by Emmerdale Insider fans have said overwhelmingly that they are not happy with the turn the storyline has taken.

When she first arrived in Emmerdale, viewers were pleasantly impressed by Celia. They felt she was reminiscent of Kim Tate in the 90s. But now her secret is out, those watching at home don’t think it’s the right direction for her to go.

The poll revealed 76 percent of viewers do not like Celia. They think the storyline is boring and have insisted Emmerdale does not need another baddie.

Just four percent said they liked her. A further 19 percent felt she was a good character, but this storyline has ruined her.

At the time of her casting, actress Jaye Griffiths, who plays her said: “Without giving the game away she is very different to anyone I have played before. I can’t wait to really get into the heart of her storyline.”

Producer Laura Shaw also added: “We are absolutely delighted to have Jaye Griffiths joining us to play the role of Celia. Having recently taken over a nearby farm, not much is known about mysterious Celia’s past before arriving on the outskirts of the village.

“While Celia has a tough edge with an air of respectability, the audience, and our villagers, will soon start to see what this woman is truly capable of.”

Jaye has since added: “At last the audience have seen the familial link between her and Ray and the fact she is the mastermind behind it all,” Jaye said.

“There is lots more drama to come but I feel that the context of the whole operation is now apparent and so the audience will now be fearing how trapped these kids are as it’s very clear Celia and Ray are not beginners at this.”

Eamonn Holmes sparked concern from his fans after revealing that he has been hospitalised.

Taking to Instagram this morning, the GB News host revealed that he’s been in hospital for an issue concerning his eye.

The former This Morning favourite shared two snaps for his 767k followers to see. In both, he can be seen wearing a big patch over his right eye. In the second, Eamonn is pulling a face while in his car, with even more tape on the patch to keep it in place.

“One of these eye patches was put on in hospital and the other one by me. See if u can guess which? Ps You should see the other guy!!!!” he captioned the post.

However, the star didn’t reveal why he has an eye patch.

A source has alleged to the Daily Mail that Eamonn underwent an eye operation that wasn’t serious.

“It seems to have put him out for longer than he hoped,” a source said, though. “It’s one thing after another with setbacks… his back as well, and he’s got to have more surgery on his back, so he’s out of action.”

Eamonn’s accident

Earlier this year, Eamonn suffered a fall while live on air on GB News.

The star fell out of his chair while presenting the show on Wednesday, May 21, leading to his show briefly being taken off air.

Despite soldiering on, Eamonn admitted he was “really sore”. “It was a shock for me because I had a fall two weeks ago in my bathroom that hospitalised me and that hit me right in the back. And that hit me again right in the back. Really really sore, really sore,” he said.

It was later reported that GB News were potentially looking at replacing Eamonn following a string of health woes.

“He’s in pain all of the time. It’s so very sad to watch. Even though he has no feeling at all in his back at times, he is up at the crack of dawn and does three hours of live television, which he is, of course, very good at. The viewers love him, but you do have to wonder how long this is going to go on,” a pal told the Daily Mail at the time.

Katie was discussing a listener’s dilemma alongside Loose Women co-star Denise Welch. A viewer emailed in asking for advice as she was concerned her daughter could start getting involved with smoking.

Katie admitted that she used to smoke, and that when she tried a vape, she realised just how addictive they could be.

She told Denise: “I have tried them. I went to this event, it was Silverstone. The racing. I think it was the Grand Prix. We were in a box that was sponsored by a vape brand, so they were giving them all out.

“I used to smoke years ago. So, I thought, well let me just try it. And I was smoking it at the event because you can go anywhere and do it wherever you want. But I woke up the next day and I was like: ‘Where is that vape? I want it.’”

Richard’s ultimatum to Katie to give up smoking

But it seems that despite wanting her vape, Katie knew that her husband wouldn’t approve of it. So much so that she actually kept it a secret from him.

She admitted: “Richie hates it. Honestly. It was one of his conditions when he first started dating me. That I had to quit smoking. So, I actually quit.”

However, when she vaped at the event, Katie kept that from her husband. And when she began experiencing negative side effects, that’s when she stopped.

Katie told Denise: “So, I had to go downstairs to get the vape out of my clutch bag. And I had to vape in the downstairs loo in the house. And then after about a week of using it, I got a pain in the back of my neck.

“I couldn’t tell Richie, because he didn’t know about it. I don’t know if that neck pain was to do with the vape. But I will say if you are experiencing any kind of symptoms, go to your GP.”

It Takes Two host  Fleur East was forced to issue an apology live on air after professional dancer Alexis Warr used “bad language” during the broadcast. The Strictly spin-off show welcomed Alexis Warr and her partner George Clarke to discuss their stellar performance over the weekend. But as Alexis was explaining a minor hiccup during their routine, she slipped out the word “cr*p” causing Fleur to halt the interview and apologise.

Dancer Alexis said: “At the beginning he hit his position and I knew right away he was locked in and I was just like yes George – and I almost forgot to go, because I was like oh wait crap I have to move”. Fleur briefly paused the programme as she issued an apology to fans at home. She told BBC viewers: “Sorry about the language you just heard, we just get very excited”. Fans slammed the apology, dubbing it “ridiculous”.

Fans fume over George and Alexis’ song choice

Many viewers were of the opinion that he should have danced to something to pay tribute to his mum and her battle with encephalitis.

George’s mum was diagnosed with encephalitis – a serious brain inflammation caused by viral infections or autoimmune conditions – back in 2015. It can lead to seizures and can be fatal.

George once explained on TikTok that his mum was given a 20% chance of survival after her diagnosis. She now lives with no sense of smell, taste, and has “little to no long-term memory”.

Others fumed that George couldn’t dance to a song by his close pal and fellow content creator, Arthur Hill.

“Need to have a word with the Strictly producers because WHY are you giving George a COUPLE’S CHOICE to a song that HE DOESN’T EVEN KNOW,” one viewer fumed. “A couple’s choice is meant to be a song and dance close to them where they have the chance to tell their story… so [bleep]ed off.”

“So upset for George what the [bleep] he should’ve got given a salsa/samba for that song instead of them wasting his couple’s choice dance on week 3 to a song he doesn’t even know,” another fumed.

‘So upset for George’

The angry comments didn’t stop there though.

“MAKING GEORGE DO HIS COUPLE’S CHOICE TO SODA POP ????? I’m sorry that’s genuinely made me so angry and upset for him, he can’t do it for his mum and encephalitis or dance to Arthur it’s literally called couple’s CHOICE, it makes no sense when soda pop is a salsa song,” a third said.

“George being the first celeb to do a couple’s choice this season of #strictly and he’s doing it to soda pop for K-Pop Demon Hunters,” a fourth grumbled. 

There was a bit of positivity from some fans, though.

“George and Alexis wronged [crying emojis]. They’ll still somehow find a way to make Soda Pop good tho,” one fan commented on the official Strictly Instagram.

“Interesting that Soda Pop is a Couple’s Choice! Excited to see what Alexis is gonna bring to the table choreo-wise,” another said.

Eamonn Holmes sparked concern from his fans after revealing that he has been hospitalised.

GB News presenter Eamonn, 65, shared the worrying update on his Instagram earlier today (Wednesday, October 8).

Eamonn Holmes’ health woes

Taking to Instagram this morning, the GB News host revealed that he’s been in hospital for an issue concerning his eye.

The former This Morning favourite shared two snaps for his 767k followers to see. In both, he can be seen wearing a big patch over his right eye. In the second, Eamonn is pulling a face while in his car, with even more tape on the patch to keep it in place.

“One of these eye patches was put on in hospital and the other one by me. See if u can guess which? Ps You should see the other guy!!!!” he captioned the post.

However, the star didn’t reveal why he has an eye patch.

A source has alleged to the Daily Mail that Eamonn underwent an eye operation that wasn’t serious.

“It seems to have put him out for longer than he hoped,” a source said, though. “It’s one thing after another with setbacks… his back as well, and he’s got to have more surgery on his back, so he’s out of action.”

Fans send Eamonn their support

Plenty of Eamonn’s fans and followers took to the comment section to send the star their support this morning.

“Oh no!! Hope not too sore!!! X,” one fan wrote. “Gosh, hope you’re okay Eamonn?!” another said.

“Uh Eamonn this looks sore. Sending you big hugs and positive energy to get well. I hope you are ok,” a third commented.

“Hope you’re okay Eamonn, take care of yourself,” another added.

“This too shall pass,” a fifth said.

Eamonn’s accident

Earlier this year, Eamonn suffered a fall while live on air on GB News.

The star fell out of his chair while presenting the show on Wednesday, May 21, leading to his show briefly being taken off air.

Despite soldiering on, Eamonn admitted he was “really sore”. “It was a shock for me because I had a fall two weeks ago in my bathroom that hospitalised me and that hit me right in the back. And that hit me again right in the back. Really really sore, really sore,” he said.

It was later reported that GB News were potentially looking at replacing Eamonn following a string of health woes.

“He’s in pain all of the time. It’s so very sad to watch. Even though he has no feeling at all in his back at times, he is up at the crack of dawn and does three hours of live television, which he is, of course, very good at. The viewers love him, but you do have to wonder how long this is going to go on,” a pal told the Daily Mail at the time.
