“BBC’s Puppet”? Zara McDermott Caught in Scandal as Thailand Documentary Branded “Repulsive”

Zara McDermott explores The Dark Side of Paradise in Thailand - "It really does have it all. But that can come with other costs."

Zara McDermott, once hailed by the BBC as a shining face of a new generation of journalists, has suddenly found herself at the center of a raging media storm. Her documentary Thailand: The Dark Side of Paradise—originally pitched as an exposé of the “untold truths” behind the tropical paradise—has instead been branded a “television nightmare” and met with unprecedented backlash.

What was supposed to be a “serious investigative piece” has now been slapped with the label “repulsive.” On social media, furious viewers accuse the production of “distorting the country’s image,” “cherry-picking the ugliest angles just to fuel drama,” and even “smearing a destination known for its friendliness and safety.”

    Shocking Allegations: “Staged” and “Deceptive”

Zara McDermott makes sad career confession ahead of new BBC documentary - OK! Magazine

The Sun fanned the flames further when it quoted a contributor to the program who alleged that scenes they took part in were “full of lies” and even “staged” to fit a pre-written script. “They just wanted drama, wanted shock value—they didn’t care about the truth,” the insider blasted.

The BBC swiftly hit back, insisting the participant had been “fully briefed, understood their role, and gave consent.” But the icy response from the public shows that explanation did little to extinguish the firestorm.

    Influencers Outraged, YouTubers Mocking

    Zara questions

According to Wikipedia, influencer Mike Yu—who also appeared in the documentary—claimed he had no idea the project would focus almost entirely on Thailand’s negative side. Meanwhile, another popular YouTuber scoffed, branding the show nothing more than a “woke propaganda piece pushed by the BBC.”

It wasn’t just online critics—those directly involved accused the production of “twisting reality” and “dressing up bias as investigation” to force a Western narrative onto an Asian country.

    “Zara Is Just a Puppet”

The drama escalated when Daily Mail reported insider claims. One source insisted: “Zara is nothing more than a puppet. The BBC propped her up as the face of the brand to take the heat, while every decision—from the concept to the edit—was controlled behind the scenes. She’s simply been used as a shield.”

The revelation ignited even more division. Some mocked her as the BBC’s failed PR tool, while others sympathized, arguing that McDermott had been “thrown to the frontlines” of a corporate power play.

From Golden Girl to Scandal Magne

Perhaps the cruelest twist is that McDermott herself saw this project as a chance to “reinvent” her career—from reality TV star to respected journalist. But instead of elevating her profile, Dark Side of Paradise has turned that dream into a nightmare, forever tethering her name to scandal.

On Twitter, one viewer fumed: “I don’t know what’s worse—the documentary’s distortion of the truth, or Zara thinking she was credible enough to front it.” Another was even harsher: “The BBC trashed Thailand’s image, and they made Zara the puppet in the process.”

    What Future for McDermott?

Now, under the crushing weight of public outrage, the question lingers: Can Zara McDermott salvage her image? Or will this scandal remain a permanent stain on her career, destroying her reinvention before it ever truly began?

One thing is certain: The Dark Side of Paradise has lived up to its title—transforming paradise into hell, not just for viewers, but for the very presenter now trapped in the storm.

Strictly star Ellie Goldstein overtaken as favourite to win ahead of first live show

The model and actress has slipped down the rankings…

Ellie Goldstein was favourite to win Strictly Come Dancing when this year’s line-up was announced.

However, sadly for the star – who is partnered with Vito Coppola – she’s slipped down the bookies’ list, being overtaken in the race to take the Glitterball Trophy home by none other than Lewis Copeland.

Blow for Strictly star Ellie Goldstein ahead of first live show

The 2025 series of Strictly Come Dancing launched on Saturday night (September 20). Viewers watched as the celebrities were introduced and paired up with their pro partners.

Model and actress Ellie Goldstein, 23, was over the moon to be paired with Vito. However, it appears the two have some work to do if they’re going to win the betting public over.

According to Sports Casting Bets, one-time favourite Ellie is now the fourth most likely star to be crowned the winner of the 2025 series.

Lewis Cope and Katya Jones are the current favourites to win, with odds of 3/1 . But after backlash about his previous dance experience, will viewers support Lewis as he makes a bid to win for the Glitterball Trophy?

Love Island star Dani Dyer is next with odds of 4/1. She’s paired with Nikita Kuzmin. Vicky Pattison and Kai Widdrington are third favourites to win, with odds of 6/1.

Ellie and Vito, meanwhile, have odds of 7/1 to win.

George Clarke and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey are both at 8/1; Karen Carney is at 16/1; Alex Kingston and Balvinder Sopal are both at 18/1; La Voix has odds of 25/1.

Bringing up the rear are Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (33/1); Thomas Skinner (40/1); Stefan Dennis (50/1); Chris Robshaw (80/1); and Ross King (100/1).

‘He already moves like a pro’

Spokesman Shane Orton told ED!: “Lewis Cope has hit the ground running at 3/1. The early favourite already moves like a pro and could be the one to beat.

“Close behind, Dani Dyer (4/1) and Vicky Pattison (6/1) are both tipped to do well thanks to their natural charm and down-to-earth appeal. While both have already joked about dodging the dreaded Strictly curse, it’s their relatability and growing confidence on the dancefloor that could see them waltz into the final.”

Complete timeline of the John Torode and Gregg Wallace MasterChef scandal

As he declares ‘life goes on’

The headlines keep on coming for Gregg Wallace, John Torode and the MasterChef franchise, with John declaring “life goes on” at an event with wife Lisa Faulkner over the weekend.

With the presenters’ careers both in tatters, and the MasterChef brand itself facing intense backlash, ED! takes a look back at the scandal…

November 2024: Gregg Wallace steps down from MasterChef

In late November of last year, Gregg Wallace broke his silence on social media after stepping down from MasterChef following misconduct allegations. 13 people had accused him of making inappropriate sexual comments.

He thanked his followers on Instagram at the time: “I would like to thank all the people getting in touch, reaching out and showing their support. That’s good of you, thank you very much.”

Banijay UK, MasterChef’s production company, said an external review would be conducted.

July 8 2025: Gregg Wallace sacked

BBC News reported Gregg Wallace had been sacked as MasterChef presenter following a six-month inquiry into alleged misconduct.

The investigation’s report, conducted by law firm Lewis Silkin, was officially due two days later, on Thursday July 10. It would find 45 of 83 allegations against Gregg Wallace were substantiated.

More than 50 people were reported to have approached the BBC with fresh claims.

    July 8: Gregg Wallace responds

In a lengthy Instagram statement, Gregg Wallace claimed he had been cleared of “the most serious and sensational allegations” made against him.

He wrote: “I recognise that some of my humour and language, at times, was inappropriate. For that, I apologise without reservation. But I was never the caricature now being sold for clicks.”

He continued: “To be clear, the Silkin’s Report [sic] exonerates me of all the serious allegations which made headlines last year and finds me primarily guilty of inappropriate language between 2005 and 2008.”

The TV presenter added: “I will not go quietly. I will not be cancelled for convenience. I was tried by media and hung out to dry well before the facts were established.”

He also complained about a perceived failure to ensure he had a safe working environment with regards to his neurodiversity.

Gregg Wallace went on: “My neurodiversity, now formally diagnosed as autism, was suspected and discussed by colleagues across countless seasons of MasterChef. Yet nothing was done to investigate my disability or protect me from what I now realise was a dangerous environment for over 20 years. That failure is now being quietly buried.”

July 14: What did the report reveal?

The report’s shocking findings included claims concerning inappropriate jokes and innuendos, sexually explicit remarks, unwanted touching. culturally insensitive or racist comments, and bullying behaviour.

45 of the allegations, span between 2005 to 2024 and relevant to his stint on MasterChef, were found to have been upheld.

July 14: BBC statement on report’s findings

The BBC subsequently announced Gregg Wallace would not work with the Corporation in the future.

A statement read: “We welcome the publication of the findings by Lewis Silkin, following the investigation into the conduct of Gregg Wallace. In light of these findings, Banijay UK and the BBC have agreed Mr Wallace’s return to MasterChef is untenable. The BBC has informed Mr Wallace we have no plans to work with him in future.”

It continued: “The investigation details a substantial number of allegations of inappropriate conduct spanning 19 years. This behaviour falls below the values of the BBC and the expectations we have for anyone who works with or for us.

“Although the full extent of these issues were not known at the relevant time, opportunities were missed to address this behaviour – both by the production companies running MasterChef and the BBC.”

    ‘More could’ve been done’

The BBC also accepted “more could and should have been done sooner”.

“We want to thank all those who took part in the investigation, including those who first raised concerns directly with the BBC in November last year. We apologise to everyone who has been impacted by Mr Wallace’s behaviour.”

The BBC also confirmed Lewis Silkin’s probe included “two further allegations which were upheld, relating to other individuals”.

It was added the findings were taken “very seriously” and “we have asked Banijay UK to take action to address these issues, which is underway”.

Regarding the future of MasterChef, it was added: “At this stage we are not going to make a final decision on the broadcast of the series that was filmed last year. We know this is disappointing for fans of the show and those who took part and at the appropriate time Banijay UK will consult further with the amateur contestants.”

    July 14: Gregg Wallace apology

Gregg Wallace issued a statement to the PA news agency following the BBC’s statement.

He said: “For eight months, my family and I have lived under a cloud. Trial by media, fuelled by rumour and clickbait. None of the serious allegations against me were upheld.

“I challenged the remaining issue of unwanted touching but have had to accept a difference in perception, and I am deeply sorry for any distress caused. It was never intended. I’m relieved that the Banijay report fully recognises that my behaviour changed profoundly in 2018.”

Gregg admitted “some of his humour and language missed the mark” but maintained he “never set out to harm or humiliate”.

He added: “I always tried to bring warmth and support to MasterChef, on screen and off. After nearly 20 years on the show, I now see that certain patterns, shaped by traits I’ve only recently begun to understand, may have been misread. I also accept that more could have been done, by others and by myself, to address concerns earlier.”

July 15: John Torode denies allegations

Reports claimed John Torode had been asked to resign from MasterChef after he was accused of racism.

John Torode acknowledged on social media that he had an allegation of using racist language against him upheld.

However, he responded by insisting neither the BBC nor Banijay had contacted him to inform him he should leave the series. But within hours the BBC revealed his contract would not be renewed.

John, reportedly “blindsided” and said to feel ‘scapegoated’, posted on Instagram: “Although I haven’t heard from anyone at the BBC or Banijay – I am seeing and reading that I’ve been ‘sacked’ from MasterChef and I repeat that I have no recollection of what I’m accused of. The enquiry could not even state the date or year of when I am meant to have said something wrong.

“I’d hoped that I’d have some say in my exit from a show I’ve worked on since its relaunch in 2005, but events in last few days seem to have prevented that. Over the past few months I’ve been considering my life and the shape of it now and in the future.”

‘I will watch fondly from afar’

He continued: “Celebrity MasterChef, which I recently filmed with Grace Dent along with the two fantastic Christmas specials, will be my last. Personally, I have loved every minute working on MasterChef, but it’s time to pass the cutlery to someone else. For whoever takes over, love it as I have.

“I will watch fondly from afar as I now focus on the many other projects I have been working towards. My tummy will be grateful for a rest after 20 years of eating, but what a joy it has been. Life is ever-changing and ever-moving and sometimes personal happiness and fulfilment lay elsewhere.”

He signed off: “Thank you for the many years of MasterChef. John Torode.”

July 16: John Torode axed, BBC confirms

The BBC confirmed in a statement that John Torode had been axed after he was accused of making a racist remark seven years ago.

It read: “John Torode denies the allegation. He has stated he has no recollection of the alleged incident and does not believe that it happened. He also says that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment.”

The statement continued: “The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind. And, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode’s contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.”

July 17: MasterChef contestant ‘feels sorry’ for Gregg Wallace

The Mirror reports MasterChef contestant Aasmah Mir “feels sorry” for Gregg Wallace after complaining about his language on the BBC show’s set.

Radio presenter Aasmah was on the show in 2017. She later complained to the show after Gregg Wallace allegedly referred to a BBC colleague as a “sexy [blank]”.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Thursday, Aasmah said: “I feel sorry for him, I do feel sorry for Gregg Wallace because of the neurodivergence, which is quite obvious here.

“But someone – the production company – should have stepped in earlier and said: ‘This is not acceptable.’ We wouldn’t have the mess we have today.”

Gregg Wallace MasterChef scandal – ‘Maybe he was just used to it’

She also reflected on her own experience: “It’s not the worst thing in the world. No one has died. But it was an uncomfortable experience. I remember feeling destabilised and I remember my cheeks were burning because I was thinking, what happened there?”

She added: “No one said anything. Both Gregg Wallace and John Torode looked completely blank, poker face. Like nothing had happened. I don’t know how many of the substantiated allegations he witnessed. So I can only talk about my own. But all I know is Gregg Wallace used an incredibly inappropriate term and John Torode didn’t do anything. There was no emotion.

“That could be because it was 2017. It had been going on since 2005 – the programme. Maybe he’d just become used to it? You would expect some emotion on his face perhaps but maybe he was just used to it and that’s not his fault necessarily. It’s Gregg Wallace’s for putting him in that position.”

ED! has approached a representative for Gregg Wallace for comment.

July 17: MasterChef star John Torode’s business claims

MailOnline also claimed “two of [John Torode’s] businesses went bust owing over £160,000 to creditors”.

The news outlet alleges: “Torode has also faced financial problems as two of his TV production firms went under in the last six years owing huge amounts.”

It reports Marcel Ltd was dissolved in December 2019 after going bust three years earlier with debts of £104,219. It was wound up in a creditor’s voluntary liquidation.

Additionally, MailOnline claims a ‘statement of affairs’ filed with Companies House shows it owed £36,388 to the HMRC, £13,950 to trade creditors and £53,881 to another firm owned by Torode, Toad Productions Ltd. MailOnline reports that also went bust at the same time.

It is also alleged Torode owed £55k for an overdrawn director’s loan account. The news outlet claims the liquidator’s report states that after meetings with Torode and his accountant, it was agreed that he should pay back £33,348. It is reported he did so in instalments over six months.

MailOnline goes on to claim after £23k liquidator fees, there was only enough to pay £9,890 to creditors.

At the same time, it is alleged, Toad Productions Ltd was wound up in August 2016 and reportedly dissolved in February 2021.

It is said to have owed £58,203. This reportedly included £54,603 to HMRC and £3,600 to trade creditors. MailOnline claims liquidators clawed back £8.5k. But after paying their fees nothing remained for creditors.

July 17: Richard Osman’s podcast claims

House of Games host Richard was creative director of Endemol Shine, part of MasterChef production company Banijay, at the time of the allegations. He also spoke out.

He claimed that John did know he was sacked. Richard also said that the slur he denies using was the worst racial slur imaginable. He was told to take a year out of presenting MasterChef, and complete an awareness course. However, he refused both, Richard said.

July 18: MasterChef host in Gold Digger slur

After Richard Osman spoke out, more details of what John said were reported.

According to reports, 60-year-old celebrity chef and TV presenter repeated lyrics from Kanye West track Gold Digger which contain the highly offensive word. It’s alleged it was said at an after-work event six or seven years ago.

John is also alleged to have used the word again while talking to a friend on the BBC show’s production team. John, who denies ever using the N-word, is said to be “devastated” by the accusations.

John’s friend “did not take offence”. The person who raised the complaint that is said to have overheard the conversation. The production friend reportedly reckoned John only used the slur as an “example” and “apologised afterwards”.

July 19: Lisa Faulkner gives new interview

John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen show aired as planned on July 19. But, at that point, Lisa still hadn’t spoken out in support of her husband.

However, a chat with the Mirror – which took place before the Banijay investigation – did reveal that the pair were planning on getting away from it all for his birthday. John turned 60 on July 23 and they had plans to enjoy a trip to Cornwall.

Lisa also told the paper the key to their happy marriage.

“I honestly have no idea about why there’s such interest [in us]. I don’t read anything about us, I certainly don’t have Google alerts set up or anything. The closest I’ve come to it is probably at food shows or when people stop us in the street and say: ‘Oh we love you two,’ or that they love the shows. Maybe it’s because we genuinely have a lovely relationship?

“We’re not in each other’s pockets, which I think would make our relationship very different. So, it’s really nice to actually catch up on holidays or when we’re working together. We have a bit of banter but it’s never sniping at each other. We’re just kind to each other, we get on and we look out for each other,” she said.

July 23: BBC statement on Gregg Wallace and John Torode’s last series of MasterChef

In a statement, the BBC revealed that the last series of the cookery show that John and Gregg presented would see the light of day.

It was revealed: “MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey. This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances. And we appreciate not everyone will agree with it.”

The statement then added: “In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC.

“However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. We want them to be properly recognised. And we want to give the audience the choice to watch the series.”

The BBC concluded its statement by describing MasterChef as “a brilliant, much-loved programme which is bigger than any one individual”.

It concluded: “There are many talented, dedicated and hard-working people who make the show what it is. It will continue to flourish on the BBC. We look forward to it returning stronger than ever in the future.”

Posting on her Instagram Stories on July 28, Lisa broke her silence. However, she didn’t directly address the scandal or mention her husband.

Speaking to camera, in a video message, Lisa shared: “Hi there, I just wanted to check in and say hello and I’m here.”

She then added: “Just thank you for all your really lovely comments because they really mean a lot, so thank you.”

September 8: New MasterChef presenters announced

The new judges and presenters for the MasterChef main series are food critic Grace Dent and chef Anna Haugh, who will host the 2026 season of the show.

Grace shared: “I’m over the moon to be coming back to the MasterChef kitchen and unearthing what culinary skills people have been cooking up behind closed doors. It’s a joy to be working with Anna, who brings all her incredible experience to the table. I am in for such a treat with this series, I can’t wait to get started.”

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: “UPDATE: I’m returning to ITV mornings! Well, for ten minutes anyway. I’ll be giving my first interview about our @PiersUncensored. Baby Reindeer scoop to BAFTA queen @reallorraine tomorrow morning. I may or may not wear a kilt.”

And during the handover between GMB and Lorraine, the Scottish presenter said: “Mr Piers Morgan is in the building and he is here!” she added: “We’ve got Piers on, speaking many things, including of course Baby Reindeer.”

Emmerdale star Alexander Lincoln and Jack Brett Anderson’s film A Night Like This hits cinemas next week, and the duo has exclusively spoken to Express.co.uk about the project, which follows the story of a broke gay actor and a failing club owner who cross paths in central London. Within the film, struggling actor Lukas (played by Jack) is on the verge of suicide and decides to drown his sorrows in a London pub. While drinking, he meets the owner, Oliver (Alexander), who is mourning the loss of his father. The pair clash at first, but they soon realise they have a lot in common as they walk around the city’s streets late at night and go into details about their complicated lives.

It’s unclear if there is a romantic spark between openly gay Lukas and Oliver – but the “will they won’t they” plot is set to keep viewers hooked.

Ahead of the film’s release, Alexander explained the pair had a “necessary connection” by “revealing themselves to each other” emotionally during their drunken conversations.

The star said: “I think it’s more organic in life than we think, and I think the film highlights that and shows that intimacy can occur, but it’s not always romance-based.”

He added: “In a lot of romance films, in a lot of queer cinema as well, sex is a huge part of everything, and it is, but I feel it can always become that.”

The former soap star said the two characters meeting and getting to know one another is “almost more intimate than the sexual part of a relationship”.

He added: “How often do you truly see someone and they truly see you? The characters wanted more from each other, which is really beautiful.”

The actor said he and Jack just wanted to bring their characters to life and “do our best,” and they were very keen on working together again in the future.

A Night Like This is out in cinemas on September 26.

HEARTBROKEN: Eamonn Holmes has shared a STATEMENT following the Tragic L0SS of John Stapleton

'Good Morning Britain' TV Programme, London, Britain - 27 Mar 2015

Eamonn Holmes has shared a heartbreaking statement after the D::eath of broadcaster John Stapleton.  The GB News host shared a post after the news of his D::eath following his battle with Parkinsons was announced on Sunday (September 22).

Reminding people that the legendary broadcaster had appeared on GB News the month prior, Eamonn wrote: “This was just over a month ago with me on GB News. How fragile life is. No way did he seem near to the end. Goodbye my old friend, one of the best.”

The interview was about John living a “near-normal life” despite his Parkinson’s battle, which he had announced in October 2024.

At the time, he told Eamonn: “It’ll only get worse, but thinking positive about it, lots of people live only a normal life with Parkinson’s, so I’m aiming to do the same.”

Eamonn and John had a long career together having worked on GMTV at the same time. Eamonn also made it clear in his tribute that the TV legend had been a friend to him.

Fans of John reflected on his GB News interview, telling Eamonn on the post: “Watched that interview, so great to have him back on our screens. So awfully sad, sending condolences to his family and friends.”

Another wrote: “Watched that interview with fond memories. So sad, he was a gentleman.”

A third said: “I watched it, was so lovely John talking to you and Penny about old times. So sad, a lovely man.”

His agent Jackie Gill said: “John had Parkinson’s disease which was complicated by pneumonia. His son Nick and daughter-in-law Lisa have been constantly at his side and John d!ed peacefully in hospital this morning.”

EMERGENCY: Katie Price shares HEARTBREAKING UPDATE with Fans From Hospital

    Katie Price

Katie Price has disclosed that she was taken to hospital at the weekend due to her dramatic weight loss. In a health update posted on Snapchat, the former glamour model revealed she needed stitches removed and underwent medical tests to determine the cause of her continuing weight loss. Supporters have previously expressed concern about Katie’s shrinking frame, and whilst the glamour model had earlier stepped on scales to demonstrate all was well, she has now confessed she “doesn’t know why” she keeps shedding pounds and required tests to establish if anything was amiss.

Speaking via her Snapchat story, Katie shared footage explaining the situation, captioning it: “Gone to the doctors about my weight.

“I’ve been up early at the doctors so she could do some bloods and because my veins are so s*** they had three attempts,” she began, reports the Mirror. “They could only fill two tubes up, so I’ve got to go back in two weeks.

“And I’ve got to have my stitches out then because they looked at my little stab wound that I did. The reason I’m going to the doctors is because I keep losing weight and I don’t know why. So that’s that.”

On Saturday (20 September) the former glamour model disclosed to followers that she had been rushed to A&E.

“Not what I had on my Bingo card fro Friday night,” she posted on another Snapchat update, alongside an image of an illuminated A&E sign. While further details remain under wraps, representatives for Katie assured The Mirror that she was “absolutely fine”, explaining her hospital visit was merely for a routine check-up and to have her stitches removed.

Previously, Katie had addressed concerns about her dramatic weight loss, affirming it was intentional. In May, she stated: “Yes I’ve lost weight. Yes that’s what I’ve wanted to do, I’ve wanted to lose weight.

“Because… three, four years ago when I broke my feet I was in a wheelchair for ten months because they said I’d never walk again, and obviously you put weight on being in a wheelchair. And then I did all the IVF stuff, that also puts on weight. So yeah, I did put on weight and I hated it, I felt uncomfortable and it wasn’t me.”

In a candid conversation on the Louis Theroux podcast last year, she opened up about her battle with body image. “I always said I haven’t got body dysmorphia,” she confessed.

“But there’s definitely something, I don’t know what it is. I’ve never looked in the mirror and thought I’m pretty.”

Friends and family have raised concerns about Katie after the star consistently arrived late or failed to show up at a series of events. An insider revealed: “Katie has been turning up late to events – or not turning up at all – and those close to her are worried that she might be getting out of control. They’ve witnessed it before. She’s trying to do it all, but she’s burning herself out. It doesn’t seem to be sinking in.”

Ruth Langsford returns to Loose Women for first time since Eamonn Holmes split | The Standard

Loose Women fans were left stunned by Janet Street-Porter’s real age ahead of her surgery. During Monday’s (September 22) edition of the hit ITV programme, Janet was joined on the panel by Ruth Langsford, Kelly Brook and Jane Moore. Later on in the show, the group spoke about challenges they’ve set themselves after Harry Styles recently ran the Berlin marathon under a fake name.

Janet, who is 78 years old, spoke about her personal goals, which have changed over the years. “When I was young, I set myself the challenge to go out two nights in a row every single week,” she began.

“And now, I set myself another challenge which is not to drink alcohol three nights running. But then I kind of revised my challenges to, ‘Can I go out, at 78, three nights in a row, have I got stamina?’”

Janet then said that her “serious challenge” was to balance on one leg while brushing her teeth. This comes shortly before the star’s upcoming right knee replacement.

“Lots of physiotherapists tell you that it’s really good for you… I might try it but I’m feeling a bit wobbly this morning,” Janet explained, before trying to balance live in the studio.

After giving the task a try, Janet returned to her seat and revealed the importance of balancing as you get older, saying: “It is serious. When you get older, you should try balancing on one leg.”

Ruth added: “They say that’s why so many more mature people, Janet, I nearly said elderly then, when people have falls they lose their sense of balance. Anything that you can test and challenge.

“That’s what I’m doing, challenging my core strength. I haven’t tried the standing on one leg doing my teeth yet though. Maybe I’ll do that in the break.”

After watching the discussion, several of the show’s viewers quickly took to social media to share their surprise at Janet’s age. “I really struggle to believe Janet is almost 80 years old,” one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Another added: “Janet looks so good!” while a third said: “How is Janet 78 years old?”

Janet notably had a left knee replacement back in 2018. She then had a hip replacement last year, which forced her to take a short break from Loose Women. Prior to the operation, the presenter revealed that her hip damage was so “painful and depressing” to live with that she was unable to eat or sleep.

John Torode has been seen out in public for the very first time since he was let go from MasterChef in July, following an allegation that he had used an “extremely racist term”. The 60-year-old presenter was spotted enjoying a day out alongside his wife, Lisa Faulkner, 53, at a food festival in Nottinghamshire as they mingled alongside other food lovers, seemingly without a care in the world. The chef has been taking some “time out” after he hit the headlines alongside his similarly scandal-embroiled co-star Gregg Wallace. The duo who fronted MasterChef for over two decades were both let go following differing allegations of misconduct. Faulkner told MailOnline in an interview: ‘MasterChef will not be the same without John. But he’s doing OK.”

John shook off his work woes as he gave two live demonstrations at the show’s packed 500-seat cookery theatre at the Festival of Food and Drink in Thoresby Hall. The former TV star shared with the crowd before his first demo: “Life goes on! I’ve had a lot of support and I’m very grateful.”

John mingled with onlookers on the second day of the two-day 12th annual event, which featured several other well-known chefs, including Simon Rimmer, Rosemary Shrager, Chris Baber and Chris Bavin, who also acted as weekend host.

The star honoured his work commitment after sharing an Instagram statement that said he had “no recollection” of what he is accused of, and had hoped to have some say in his exit from the BBC. The controversy over MasterChef started last year, when claims of inappropriate sexual language were made against Gregg.

The former greengrocer has always denied the more than 40 allegations made against him, which were upheld as part of an inquiry into his conduct.

Speaking on allegations that were supposedly made in a social setting in 2018 or 2019, John said: “I do not believe that it happened.” He said that the allegation included that the “person I was speaking with did not believe that it was intended maliciously and that I apologised immediately afterwards”.

He added: “I want to be clear that I’ve always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. I’m shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence.”
