Sky News was interrupted for a major breaking news announcement as Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued an urgent statement.
Political correspondent Rob Powell took over the report as he shared his analysis of what Starmer would be discussing in his speech. No.10 had announced he would sharing an update on Middle East conflict but shared no more information.
Powell was suddenly interrupted as Sky went to Starmer at 2pm, as he announced UK is sending four more Typhoon jets to join its operations in Qatar amid the conflict in the Middle East, and confirmed the Government repatriation flight to Britain took off from Oman “a few minutes earlier”.
He stated that the UK has allowed the US to use British bases “to conduct defensive operations”, as he added: “We will maintain this shield over British people in the region and our allies,” as he said the government is working to “get people out” of the Gulf region.

He also addressed why the UK didn’t initially allow the request to allow US planes to use British bases for offensive strikes, saying: “My focus is on providing calm, level-headed leadership in the national interest,” adding that this meant “having the strength to stand firm by our values and our principles no matter the pressure to do otherwise”.
Starmer added: “That’s why I took the decision that the UK would not join the initial strike. That decision was deliberate. It was in the national interest. And I stand by it.”
He concluded his statement by saying the conflict “could continue for some time”.
He also said to the UK: “We should come together in this moment”, and that the “scared” British citizens who are stuck in the region “come from all backgrounds”, adding: “The armed forces who protect them come from all backgrounds too.”
After taking questions from the journalists in the room, Starmer swiftly ended the conference and walked off camera.
